Often a remake of a good famous film is significantly worse than the original. In the case of the well-known melodrama reassembled, one could say that it is so, especially according to critics, but why then do viewers love the heart-rending story of 2001 called “Sweet November”? The actors who played in the remake, in the first place, were the reason for the praise of the audience. After all, the main roles went not to someone, but to first-class Hollywood stars, Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron.
What are you talking about?
This is a story about an advertising agent Nelson Mosse, who is immersed headlong in his career and there is no longer any place in his life for anything but work. And so for quite a long time. But, as often happens in the movies, one meeting can completely change a person’s life. This happens with Moss when he meets the mysterious and completely unusual girl Sarah, who turns Nelson’s usual life upside down in just one month. He begins to notice things that he did not pay attention to before, begins to rejoice, live, love. After only a month of dating, he is ready to make an offer to Sarah, but the girl rejects him and reveals his secret to him. That’s the whole short story of the movie “Sweet November”, the actors of which revealed their characters incomparably and made the good half of the viewers empathize with them, rejoice with them and cry at the end of the film, and finally think and, possibly, reevaluate their lives.
From action movies to romance
On the wave of success after the "Matrix", the performer of the role of Neo did not want to remain in one role and tried himself in various projects, including melodramas, one of which was "Sweet November". Keanu Reeves at the peak of his popularity broke more than one female heart among the spectators. Actually, he was an excellent candidate for any film about love. Non-standard, but such an attractive appearance, a special charm, an aura of mystery and an excellent acting game helped Reeves get a role in the movie "Sweet November." The actors who embodied love on the screen in this melodrama already had a joint work behind them in “Devil's Advocate”, and also were good friends, which could not but be reflected in the frame, their tandem came out very harmonious.
The conqueror of male hearts
As already mentioned, a couple of irresistible Kean was a famous Hollywood beauty and just a fantastic actress, at that time, however, not so famous, but very promising. Charlize Theron in the movie "Sweet November" got the role of a very atypical girl, outwardly cheerful and carefree, whose friends included the most unpredictable personalities. And all would be fine, but Sarah Deaver was terminally ill and for the time remaining she wanted to bring happiness to the maximum number of people, even if in a rather non-standard way. Theron amazingly coped with her role, her character turned out so original and enchanting that it seemed that she did not belong to this world.
The second plan and not only
However, not only the two heroes are the dramatic tape "Sweet November." Actors who played minor characters also deserve attention. The talented and diverse Briton Jason Isaacs received an unusual role in this film - a transvestite named Chaz, one of Sarah's unusual friends. A similar plan for the role of Brandon / Brandy and Michael Rosenbaum. Also in the film were Greg Hermann (Vince), Liam Aiken (Ebner), Frank Langella (Edgar Price) and Lauren Graham in the role of Angelica. From a flurry of criticism, even a good cast did not save the film "Sweet November." Critics' reviews were simply derogatory, and the tape itself was even nominated for Golden Raspberry, a kind of opposite of the Oscars. There were three nominations: for the worst remake, worst actor and worst actress. Paradoxically, all this did not stop the film from becoming one of the most beloved melodramas among the audience and gaining literally worldwide popularity.
Unforgettable original
Like it or not, the drama directed by Pat O'Connor is really just a remake of the 1968 film, and if you compare them, the new film loses a little to the original. Released in 2001, “Sweet November” significantly adapted the plot, adjusting it to modern realities, changed the name of the main character, his profession and the moment he met Sarah, as well as a considerable number of minor elements. And of course, acting. No matter how good Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron are, but Sandy Dennis and Anthony Newley embodied the images of Sarah and Charles Blake simply stunning in the film, based on the play by Herman Raucher "Sweet November" (photo actors). But if we ignore the original source, then you can fully enjoy the new version of this story, which is successfully proved by the audience, who for more than fourteen years have considered this film one of the most beautiful love stories.
