The 2014 Interstellar film (interstellar, English - "interstellar") once again confirmed that Christopher Nolan is a great director. And he can safely claim a place in the pantheon of the titans of the film industry, next to James Cameron and Steven Spielberg.
The audience did not expect less from the creator of such tapes as "Beginning", "Prestige" and the Batman trilogy. Interstellar would be a logical continuation of this chain of success, but in 2016, Nolan took part in the unsuccessful film adaptation of the comic strip Batman vs. Superman. At the dawn of justice ”, then rehabilitated as a director of the successful military drama“ Dunkirk ”(2017).
But today we want to look back and remember Interstellar. The film (2014), the actors and the roles in which they starred, impressed a large part of the audience. And only a few remained indifferent to this magnificent picture, combining science fiction and a very subtle drama about simple but important human feelings such as caring for loved ones, love, sacrifice, faith in the best.
In fairness, it is worth noting that some of the critics and viewers received the tape more than cool, and we will stop there too.
Actors and roles. The creators of the film "Interstellar"
Christopher Nolan is the main creator of Interstellar. He acted as a director and producer, and also took part in writing the script. But his brother, Jonathan Nolan, who was invited as a screenwriter in 2007, was the first to get into the project. Christopher was appointed director only in 2012, initially Stephen Spielberg became interested in the film, who was forced to leave due to a conflict of interest between the studios.
The idea of the film appeared back in 1997, it was born in the process of cooperation between Linda Obst (producer) and Kip Thorne (physicist). So, from a scientific point of view, the film is quite reliable, it was originally thought to be that way, and in the process, the creators constantly consulted with scientists about how this or that event would look realistic on the screen.
Who else participated in the creation of Interstellar (the 2014 film)? The actors were not chosen for long, since Nolan almost immediately approved Matthew McConaughey, En Hathaway was able to take part in the film due to a change in the filming time of another major project, Matt Damon got a secondary role, Michael Kane was completely removed in every Nolan film. So the acting group was “star” in the best sense of the word.
And why is Interstellar, the 2014 film so interesting? To begin with, we list actors and characters as a list:
- Anne Hathaway - Amalia Brand, Spaceman.
- Matthew McConaughey - Cooper, the main character of the film, a former pilot, an astronaut.
- Jessica Chastain - Murph, Cooper's matured daughter.
- Mackenzie Foy - Murph at age 10.
- Michael Kane is Professor Brand.
- Matt Damon is Dr. Mann.
Plot
Earth is dying. Food shortages, since almost all plants except corn have disappeared. Dust storms, depletion of all resources, and the viewer learns about all these events from the everyday life of an ordinary farmer - the former pilot Cooper.
But after some time, due to a chain of inexplicable events, Cooper finds out that the government has not completely curtailed the space program and that he and other cosmonauts will have to find a new home for humanity. Namely, go through the wormhole, and check out three conditionally suitable planets to which research ships had already been sent.
This is the plot of the film, but in order to find out the final, you need to see the entire tape. And believe me, it's worth it.
Interesting facts about the film
- For shooting on the farm, 2 km² of corn was grown, and in a place where this crop feels uncomfortable, namely in Canada, near the city of Calgary.
- Cooper's house was completely residential, but there was no running water. Despite this, Matthew McConaughey lived in it, in order to better get used to the image of Cooper, while other actors preferred trailers.
- The spacesuit in the film was fully functional and weighed 15 kg.
- All starships were built in full size.
- The spacecraft scenes were filmed using traditional miniatures. But they were of such size that the film crew called them "maxiures."
- The Endurance really rotated, it was driven by a hydraulic system, the layout itself was in limbo in one of the largest pavilions.
Why "Interstellar" became the best film of the year
Why is Interstellar (2014) so good? The actors in the film starred really magnificent, the plot is equally interesting for lovers of science fiction, as well as for lovers of good cinema about the relationship between people. In total, this is already a lot in order for the film to "get" into the audience.
But the picture is good for many other reasons: the beautiful long plans of space, on which the ship seems to be a speck of dust, the dialogue of the heroes, music - all above all praise. This is a picture at the intersection of lyrics and physics. On the one hand, the theory of relativity and real scientific facts about gravity, hypotheses about the multiplicity of measurements are explained to the viewer, on the other hand, they provide an opportunity to enjoy all the facets of human nature, such as betrayal for the sake of survival, refusal to see how children grow up, for the sake of saving humanity love for which a person can accomplish the impossible.
Negative reviews
Why didn’t everyone like Interstellar? The film (2014), the actors who starred in it, received not only positive reviews. The tape was scolded for being prolonged - 3 hours of screen time, with a third of the whole picture taking prehistory. Frankly speaking, some scenes could be reduced. Moreover, the most aggressive haters claim that if you cut out all the boring scenes, then there will be no film as such - it will end.
Not everyone appreciated the music either - one soundtrack for 160 minutes, and quite minimalistic in sound, made me sad. Also, despite the scientific credibility of the film, much was not shown or looked illogical.
And the audience was especially indignant because of the acting talent of Anne Hathaway, but rather its absence - her attempts to portray plausible emotions were not appreciated by all. Amalia’s boring monologues will be attributed to the scriptwriters.
But the opponents of the film are in the minority, and this picture is definitely worth seeing for everyone.
Is Christopher Nolan a genius?
Should Christopher Nolan's top career be considered the Interstellar tape? The film (2014), the actors who starred in it, undoubtedly affected the most sentimental strings in the soul of most viewers. And as expected, Nolan continues to make good films - Dunkirk 2017 received high marks from both critics and ordinary viewers. But there are doubts that this victory parade will continue. Firstly, Nolan has no serious competitors today - Cameron, Spielberg and Jackson shoot a little because of age. Secondly, the director’s projects are already beginning to suffer from “nepotism” - Christopher always works with his brother, invites familiar actors, which is why for many years this whole company has been boiling in its own juice. There is no rush of fresh thoughts, there is no one who will point out to the master the flaws of the projects (and they are even in the best films).
But so far, the credit of trust in Nolan is high, and viewers are eagerly awaiting each new picture. Whether it will last long or not, we will find out only with time.
