All of us, the people who live today, were born in the era of cinema and new technologies. Now you will not surprise us with films of various genres and music of various directions.
Naturally, films are different. Currently, there are a huge number of them. And everyone can choose for himself what he likes best. And if it suddenly happens that time has been spent on a film about which they say that it is "completely nonexistent", then we are disappointed. But, fortunately, it happens and vice versa. All people take great pleasure in watching a movie from which we cannot tear ourselves away, watch it in one breath and secretly pray that it lasts longer.
One of these film projects can rightfully be considered the psychological thriller "Side Effect". The actors are selected perfectly, and the plot captures from the first minute. The film is directed by Stephen Soderbergh. On his account such famous films as "Pleasantville", "Ocean Trilogy", "Solaris", "Knockout" and many others.
Plot
The premiere of "Side Effect" took place in the United States in early February 2013. And then, at the end of the same month, in Russia. The feature film "Side Effect", the actors of which are only people we know, instantly caused a huge storm of emotions around the world and found its fans. What is the picture about?
"Side effect" is a psychological film. If you don’t tolerate such genres, it’s best to avoid viewing. But are there any such viewers?
First meeting
At first, the film introduces us to a man named Martin Taylor, who only went free after a four-year sentence. A few days later, his wife Emily crashed into a concrete wall at great speed, trying to commit suicide.
Miraculously, the rescued woman is taken to the hospital. There she is appointed a personal psychiatrist Jonathan Banks, who monitors her safety and after much persuasion still agrees to let her go home, only on condition that the girl visits him regularly.
After trying several antidepressants, Dr. Banks realizes that none of them improves the condition of a young woman. Hoping to help her in any way, he contacts Victoria’s former psychiatrist Emily. That, in turn, recommends a new experimental drug - "Ablix".
At first, the doctor doubts whether it is worth risking the girl’s life by prescribing her an unverified drug. But all doubts disappear at a time when Emily is trying to re-commit suicide.
Unexpected twists - the most valuable thing in the plot
Moreover, the medicine helps the girl, and she finally begins to live a normal life. The only side effect exerted by the drug is rare cases of somnambulism. One day, at one of these moments, Emily kills her husband with a knife.
During the trial of the girl, the doctor tries to convince the judge and the jury of her innocence. But as a result, he ruins his career due to the fact that everyone considers him guilty of what happened, since he is the doctor who prescribed the dangerous drug.
The girl is recognized as insane and placed in a psychiatric hospital until her psychiatrist calls her healthy. Despite the fact that Jonathan's life went downhill, he still tries to get to the bottom of the truth. It takes a tremendous effort to find out that everything that happened was carefully planned and adjusted by Victoria and Emily. And yet, the doctor manages to obtain evidence with the help of a situation he adjusted when he, under the guise of a serum of truth, injects Emily a placebo. The girl succumbs to deception and reveals to Jonathan the whole truth.
Following her suspicions, Victoria sends Jonathan’s wife incriminating photographs hinting at her husband’s relationship with Emily. After which the man’s marriage breaks up, and his wife, taking his son, leaves.
The doctor, using his power as a psychiatrist, prohibits any contact between Emily and Victoria, while setting them against each other. Emily comes in contact with the doctor and tells him the whole truth. After her husband was arrested, the girl hated him, accusing him of losing a rich, carefree life because of him. She seduced Victoria, developing a romantic relationship with her.
Emily teaches her friend the financial knowledge she saw from her husband, and in return she teaches her to pretend to be mentally ill. The girls' plan was to fake a non-existent side effect from the use of the drug "Abliks". And make a tidy sum of it due to the fall in the company's shares.
"Side effect": actors
Initially, the main female role in the film was to be performed by actress Blake Lively. But due to circumstances unknown to us, it soon became known that Rooney Mara would replace her.
The role of Dr. Jonathan Banks was masterfully performed by the famous actor Jude Law. Former psychiatrist Emily Victoria was played by the famous actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. And the role of the wife of Jonathan Deidra Banks is the actress Vinessa Shaw.
