Actovegin (gel): instructions for use and reviews

For any lesions of the mucous membranes and skin, including burns, abrasions, cracks, a remedy is needed that will accelerate energy metabolism, and contribute to faster regeneration. Often for this purpose, the drug "Actovegin" (gel) is prescribed. Instructions for use recommend it primarily for various lesions of the cornea, but it is widely used for other skin areas. The active substance of this gel has a higher concentration in comparison with cream and ointment, which means that this form of release is indicated for more severe lesions.

How does the Actovegin medicine (eye gel) work?

The main active component in the composition of the drug is the blood hemoderivative of calves in deproteinized form, i.e. protein-free dialysis extract. It contains amino acid derivatives and peptides. 1 g of the drug (20% gel) contains the equivalent of 8 g of dry matter.

When applied to the affected area, cells quickly consume and utilize glucose and oxygen. This increases the metabolism of ATP and, accordingly, accelerates energy metabolism.

What is Actovegin gel? The description of the instruction to it offers the following: it is an almost transparent gel-like substance; may have a yellowish tint. The slight odor characteristic of medicines disappears soon after application. The gel has a non-sticky consistency and is easy to use. Available in tubes of 20 grams.

In what cases is the drug "Actovegin" (gel) indicated? The instructions for use recommend it for the treatment of wounds, as well as inflammatory diseases of the cornea of the eye, other mucous membranes (for example, lips), as well as the skin. It is this drug that is often prescribed for burns (not only thermal, but also solar, as well as electric), with or without a bandage, depending on the degree of burn. It is also used for wet ulcers, often in combination with ointment. Doctors also prescribe it for the complex treatment of radiation injuries of the skin and mucous membranes.

In ophthalmology, the drug "Actovegin" (gel), the instructions for use recommends use not only for burns. It is successfully used for defective corneal epithelium and dystrophic processes in it in those who wear contact lenses.

The medicine “Actovegin” (gel) is prescribed for use directly on the affected areas (in this case, the layer should be thin and updated several times a day). In the presence of ulcerative surfaces - a thicker layer, covering the top with a bandage with ointment, including the same active substance, but in a lower concentration (usually 5%). In severe lesions, therapy is also supplemented with an injectable drug. When treating the cornea, the gel is placed directly in the eye dropwise, up to 3 times a day.

As a rule, the drug is prescribed by a doctor who has sufficient data on its effectiveness. As for the independent use in the treatment of smaller abrasions and minor burns, reviews about the healing ability of the drug are different. Most people who use Actovegin gel confirm its regenerative properties when applied to fresh wounds and abrasions, but it may not be enough to treat ulcerative skin lesions and subsequent scars.

In the form of a gel, the drug has no contraindications and does not have a systemic effect. They should refrain from treatment only if there are cases of intolerance to drugs of a similar composition. Gel tolerance by most patients is good, and a possible slight burning sensation at first use is normal. In any case, specialist advice is more than desirable. Therefore, it is useful to have the gel in your home medicine cabinet, however, to avoid complications, do not neglect the advice of a doctor.
