Motilium: instruction

Motilium is produced in tablets intended for resorption or in the form of a suspension. The active substance of the drug is domperidone, which refers to central-acting antiemetics that block dopamine receptors in the brain.

Motilium (instructions indicate this) has antiemetic properties due to the fact that domperidone inhibits the production of dopamine, like some antipsychotics. However, the active substance is poorly absorbed through the blood-brain barrier, after its administration almost no side effects are observed. It should be borne in mind that Motilium stimulates the pituitary gland, in particular, the release of prolactin.

During treatment with domperidone, the period of dantral and duodenal contractions increases, gastric emptying accelerates, and the pressure of the sphincter located in the lower digestive system in healthy people increases. The drug does not affect the production of gastric juice.

Pharmacokinetic characteristic

After fasting, Motilium medicine (the instruction says this) is rapidly absorbed from the intestinal tract. The maximum concentration of the drug in blood plasma is determined after 60 minutes.

Domperidone is recommended to be taken before meals, as studies have shown that this medication taken after meals is absorbed from the intestinal wall longer.

Motilium, indications for use

The drug is prescribed:

- with an indigestion, which is accompanied by a feeling of fullness of the stomach, bloating, pain, belching, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, heartburn;

- with nausea and vomiting of a functional, organic, infectious etiology that arose after radiotherapy, drug treatment or a dietary disorder;

- with nausea and vomiting caused by dopamine agonists in cases of their use in Parkinson's disease (L-dopa, for example, and bromocriptine).

Motilium dosing instructions

In case of chronic digestion, adults and children over the age of five are prescribed 10 mg of the drug. Use before meals in about 30 minutes. If necessary, the doctor may recommend taking Motilium before bedtime. The maximum daily dose for children under 12 years of age (from 5 years) is prescribed in the amount of 2.4 mg of domperidone per 1 kg of body weight of the child, but it should not exceed 80 mg.

Observing the lack of effect, the doctor can double a single dose of Motilium for adults, as well as for children over 12 years of age. But in any case, the maximum daily dose of 80 mg should not be exceeded.

Motilium (the instructions clearly indicate this), produced in the form of lozenges, is intended only for use by adults and children weighing more than 35 kg. In pediatrics, the Motiliumยฎ pharmaceutical suspension should be used.

For patients with renal failure, it is recommended to increase the interval between every two doses of the drug. Due to the fact that only 1% of domperidone is excreted unchanged by the kidneys, there is no need to adjust the amount of a single dose of the drug for kidney patients. When re-prescribed, the doctor must take into account the severity of renal failure, in special cases, a dose reduction may be required.

Contraindications to the drug Motilium

The medicine can not be taken orally:

- with mechanical obstruction of the intestine or perforation, when it is dangerous to stimulate the motor function of the stomach;

- with gastrointestinal bleeding;

- with established prolactin-secreting pituitary tumor (prolactinoma);

- while taking ketoconazole orally;

- in children under 5 years of age, the tablet form is contraindicated, "Motilium" in the form of a suspension is recommended;

- with an allergic reaction to one of the components of the drug.

Since the bulk of the drug is excreted through the liver, Domperidone should be carefully prescribed to patients with insufficient hepatic function.
