"One Day" is a 2011 film directed by Lone Scherfig based on the novel of the same name by David Nicholls. The main roles in the melodrama were played by Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. What is the picture narrating about and what reviews did it receive from the audience?
A brief plot of the film
After the premiere of the film “One Day,” reviews on the melodrama came mixed. This was the case when the opinions of professional critics and ordinary viewers did not radically coincide.
The picture tells about the fate of two friends - Emma and Dexter. They met at the graduation party in college and, despite being too different in character, found many common ground.
Years passed, each of the main characters led his life. But at the most important and crucial moments, they supported each other. For Emma, a relationship with Dexter from the very beginning meant more than ordinary friendship. But Dexter stubbornly did not notice this and realized how blind he was only when he lost everything, including Emma’s disposition.
Dexter was desperate to catch up, and seemed to be close to his goal. But fate decreed differently ...
One Day (2011 film): actors
Anne Hathaway (Interstellar, Les Miserables) is one of the most prominent actresses of our time. It seems that there is no role that Hathaway could not cope with: in her piggy bank of images are princesses and super-women, swindlers and respectable girls, frivolous screen stars and notorious sociopaths.
The image of the writer Emma Morley was also a success for the actress. Humanity and devotion, the ability to empathize and truly love - this is what makes the viewer feel sympathy for the heroine of Hathaway from the first minutes of the melodrama "One Day".
Reviews from professional observers about the game by Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas, Geostorm), Ann’s partner on the set, were also mostly positive. He perfectly fell into the image of a young dandy who does not stand the test of fame and sweet life. The hero of Sturgess undergoes a series of transformations during the film, becoming a real man.
But if the acting was great, then what did the critics in the Lone Scherfig film not like?
One Day: Criticism
Of 100% of reviews written by critics of different countries, only 37% were positive. Claims were mainly expressed for the quality of the work of the director and the crew as a whole.
For example, a journalist observer from the Kommersant newspaper expressed the opinion that the plot was worked out superficially and that the causal relationship of the heroes' actions was poorly traced. The melodrama was diagnosed with a vulgar tragic misalliance.
A critic from Time-Out magazine felt that the director and screenwriter did not have the skill to convey the sharp and subtle humor that is present in the novel by David Nicholls. The ease and irony of the narrative were completely lost.
Viewers reviews
As for the audience’s perception of the film “One Day”, the audience’s feedback on the melodrama was more than satisfactory. On the Kinopoisk website, the rating of the painting is 7.7 out of 10, and on the IMDb website - 7 out of 10. It follows that the East European audience liked the picture even more than viewers from the USA or Western Europe.
Despite the director’s mistakes, the audience managed to “count” the sincere desire of the actors to convey the difficult history of the relationship between Emma and Dexter. Perhaps one of the audience recognized himself in the heroes of the melodrama: we all have ever experienced failure in our careers and personal lives, sometimes we also choose the wrong partners and suffer from unrequited love.
The main thing is that after viewing the painting “One Day”, I want to drop all prejudices, live a bright and fulfilled life today, without wasting time, as, unfortunately, the main characters of the melodrama - Emma and Dexter did.
