Nick (Ryan Reynolds), a good policeman from Boston, is seeking a crime in order to secure his beloved - he is hiding gold bullion seized from the bandits. The next day, he dies at the hands of his partner Bobby Hayes (actor Kevin Bacon), who knocked Nick to hide the precious metal.
Instead of hell or paradise, the hero finds himself in a temporary reception center, in which an experienced official, not devoid of sex appeal, Proctor (Mary-Louise Parker) offers him a choice: to continue his afterlife or serve in the Phantom Patrol - an analogue of the police.
