Rectal bleeding

Heavy bleeding from the rectum is very rare, with diverticula or angio dysplasia. With a large loss of blood, the patient has a depletion of the body, a decrease in blood pressure, severe weakness up to fainting. With minor bleeding, individual drops, streaks of blood or spotting, visible on the linen, the patient does not feel sick.

But it is advisable to undergo examination and make a colonoscopy in any case. During the procedure, the doctor can eliminate some of the causes of bleeding: remove polyps, burn small ulcers and bleeding vessels. Moderate and heavy bleeding is treated under stationary conditions in an operational way with blood transfusion.

Bleeding from the rectum has various causes and is noticeable in many diseases. Scarlet blood found on feces or toilet paper indicates the presence of internal hemorrhoids or a crack in the rectum. Very rarely, this symptom can occur with anus cancer.

The appearance of blood streaks along with mucus in the feces causes a suspicion of colitis, proctitis, polyp. Often this indicates colon cancer. Dark stools, almost black in color, indicate internal bleeding from the stomach and small intestines.

The allocation of small droplets or a trickle of blood at the end of a bowel movement characterizes hemorrhoid bleeding. It will be most abundant with a complication of thrombosis - hemorrhoidal necrosis , when a seal is felt in the anus.

You should never postpone a visit to the doctor until later. Indeed, very often this delay becomes fatal. Therefore, it is important for each person to know when it is necessary to go to the hospital:

  • spotting appeared for the first time, regardless of quantity, frequency, profusion and color;
  • massive bleeding from the rectum that does not stop for 20 minutes (in this case, call an ambulance);
  • after the age of 40, blood discharge from the rectum began to disturb again;
  • with the addition of symptoms such as fever, weight loss, weakness, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea;
  • in case of blood after radiation therapy, a short time after cancer treatment;
  • people whose relatives had a history of cancer.

Bleeding from the rectum can occur with infectious diseases such as dysentery, salmonellosis, amoebiasis, with ulcerative colitis, when the temperature rises and pains appear in the abdomen. Often when infected with worms, dark bloody clots in the feces are visible, with gonorrhea or trichomoniasis, these signs appear shortly after sexual anal infection.

In people older than 70 years, blood stains on linen may be noticeable as a result of intestinal vascular thrombosis and fragility of the vascular wall against the background of angiodysplasia. Traces of blood are also detected with HIV infection. But the most common cause, of course, is hemorrhoids.

Often, if hemorrhoids occur, bleeding occurs when straining after passing solid feces, after physical exertion. Subject to the rules of personal hygiene and labor protection, it is possible to avoid complications, but timely treatment for medical care is necessary.

In young children, intestinal infection, lactase deficiency, intestinal torsion, anus fissure in the presence of chronic constipation can cause bleeding. If the baby refuses food, cries a lot, he has a fever and bloody diarrhea, then you need to urgently call an ambulance or a pediatrician. It is necessary to conduct a full examination of the child and establish the cause of the disease.

Adults with the appearance of this insidious symptom should always consult a therapist, who, if necessary, will send for examination to a specialist. For differential diagnosis, sigmoidoscopy, irrigoscopy, colonoscopy, in addition to digital examination, and general analyzes are required.
