Theater History

One of the oldest cities in Russia is Ryazan. The drama theater, which was founded here, is one of the oldest in our country. The year of its foundation is considered to be 1778. For the first time the theater of the city of Ryazan was mentioned in the report on the inspection of the province. This document is dated March 5, 1787. The theater building at that time was wooden. The report is kept to this day in the state archive of the city. The theater at that time was called the “Opera House”. The very first troupe of the city consisted of yard and released girls and boys.

Actors who served in the imperial theaters, as well as provincial, but famous throughout the country, artists began to come here. On the stage of the Ryazan drama, even Ira Aldridge, the world famous tragedian from America, performed.

In 1862, the Opera House became a city drama theater. Such celebrities as F.I. Chaliapin, M. Schepkin, M. Petipa, M. Tarkhanov, K. S. Stanislavsky, M. Ermolova and others have visited here.

In 1899, on the stage of the Ryazan Drama Theater, the legendary Seagull premiered. The repertoire was updated. A permanent troupe appeared here in 1935. Two years after this event, the theater received regional status. During the war, artists performed in front of fighters in hospitals.

In 1961, the building was built for the theater, in which it is located today. The auditorium seats 700 people.

In the 90s of the 20th century, the theater was headed by Zh. V. Vinogradov. From her very first productions, she demonstrated her great creative potential. She puts on performances brightly, expressively and inventively. The performances of Zh. Vinogradova are the real golden fund of the theater.

Recently, a hall with a small stage was opened here. It contains only 65 seats. Here, performances based on poetic material are performed. One of the same performances was created based on the poetry cycle of Sergei Yesenin “Persian motifs”. A theater with this production took part in the competition of poetry performers Sergei Yesenin and took 1st place.

In 2013-2014, the main director of the Ryazan drama was Sergey Vinogradov.

Today the theater is headed by Karen Nersisyan. The troupe often takes part in contests and festivals, delights the viewer with new productions, preserves and develops the traditions of Russian art, while not lagging behind modern life.

Museum

The Drama Theater (Ryazan) invites the audience to visit their museum before and during the intermission of each performance. It was discovered in 1987. Its creation was dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the theater. In the museum you can see posters, programs and photographs of past years, learn about the history of the theater from the moment of its creation to the present day. The exposition tells about the brilliant actors and directors who served here. There are stands that are dedicated to the war.
