Tortillas are delicious and simple. How to cook them at home and how to use ready-made cakes?

Tortillas are tortillas that came to us from faraway Mexico. They are somewhat similar to the well-known pita bread: thin rolled dough, fried in a pan. They are quite unusual in taste, not quite similar to plain bread. But the most important thing is to eat them hot, only then you can feel their indescribable taste.

The name itself is translated as “round cake”, and pronounced in two ways: “tortilla” or “tortilla”. In Spanish, the second option will be correct, but for the Russian ear the first is more familiar.

In Mexico, tortilla is one of the most common foods used in food. What only of them do not cook! Using cakes, they eat sauces, dip them in goulash, and stuff them with a wide variety of fillings.

Now "round cakes" can be purchased in our stores, but it is not so easy to do, because not everyone has them on sale. And the taste is much inferior to the present: the dough is more like rubber.

Cooking tortilla at home

Homemade tortilla is prepared in an elementary way and does not take much time. To make a delicious tortilla, you need a minimum of ingredients. In addition, there are several cooking methods. Traditionally tortillas are tortillas made from corn dough. But if you use the usual, they turn out no less tasty. Let's look at both ways.

Corn tortillas

Essential Ingredients:

  • two glasses of cornmeal;
  • one and a half glasses of water;
  • half a teaspoon of salt;
  • some vegetable oil for frying.

Cooking

Mix flour and salt first. Pour water into the bowl gently while kneading the dough. It should look like plasticine: soft, dry and supple.

Cut the mass into small pieces and roll them into thin cakes. The dough should not be torn. If this suddenly happened, add some more water to it.

It is very important to choose the right frying pan for frying. The best choice for tortilla is cast iron, because it evenly distributes heat. Add a little oil to the pan and fry the cakes first on one side and then on the other until they turn a slightly golden color. Cover the finished cakes with something to keep them warm.

If for some reason the cornmeal option is not suitable for you, but you want to make tortilla cakes, the recipe for flour dough is just for you.

Ingredients:

  • four glasses of flour;
  • a small spoon of baking powder;
  • a spoon of salt;
  • glass of water;
  • some vegetable oil.

Cooking process

In a sufficiently large bowl, mix the flour, salt and baking powder. Then add some vegetable oil or fat. Knead the dough well so that there are no lumps. Make a small depression and pour in half the water, stir, and then add the rest. The resulting dough should be slightly sticky.

Leave the mass for about ten minutes. Cut into pieces and roll them. Fry the cakes in a pan. As soon as you see that bubbles appear, then they are ready.

Where to use tortilla

Both cooked houses and bought cakes are a great snack. Simply select a filler: here you can fantasize almost endlessly! For example, it turns out very tasty with chicken fried in a pan and feta cheese. Another filling option is beef and red beans.

Just like pita bread, tortillas can be filled with grated cheese with mayonnaise, garlic and herbs, and then cut into small pieces.

Do not be afraid to experiment. They can even be filled with shrimp and other seafood. An interesting taste is obtained if the cakes along with the filling are baked in the oven. In addition, they can be served just like that, as bread, along with sauces.
