The Lipetsk Drama Theater has been around for almost 100 years. His repertoire includes classical plays, as well as works by Soviet contemporary playwrights, and plays based on children's fairy tales.
History of creation
Lipetsk Drama Theater named after Tolstoy L.N. It was opened in the summer of 1921. The first performance was the play "Savva" by Leonid Andreev. It was directed by V.A.Ruslov. In winter, the premieres of performances such as "Kashirskaya olden time", "Free Life", "Dark Spot", "Wave" and so on. There were 25 actors in the troupe. Artists were invited by local and Moscow. Since 1923, the theater has not had its own troupe. In winter, there were no performances on its stage, in the summer groups from other cities came on tour.
In the 30s, the city authorities decided to restore the stationary theater and assemble their troupe. In 1931, actors were recruited. The premiere performance of the updated theater took place in February 1932. It was the play "The First Horse". The inhabitants of Lipetsk fell in love with the theater from the very first productions. Further, the actors presented their audience with such performances as Othello, Woe from Wit, Anna Karenina, and other classical plays. Also, the theater did not disregard the plays of contemporary playwrights. Since the building was small and did not accommodate everyone in the auditorium, the troupe organized on-site performances that were held in work clubs.

During the war years, many actors went to the front to defend their homeland. Some of them died. The artist V. Litavrin received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. One of the streets in Lipetsk is named after him. The theater continued to operate during the war years. Artists drove along the fronts with performances and concerts.
In the late 50s - early 60s of the 20th century, the Lipetsk Drama Theater changed its repertoire. Now, the main characters of the productions are people who are bold, disinterested, hard workers who are able to fight. For example, a play by N. Wirth entitled “Dali Boundless”. The main character of this production is the secretary of the district committee, who is fighting for new ideals of morality.
In the 60-70s of the 20th century was the heyday of the theater. The repertoire was replenished with a large number of different productions.
In 1981, the theater was named after L.N. Tolstoy. This phenomenon is unique. There is no longer any theater in Russia that bears the name of this writer. In 1994, another significant event occurred. The theater was awarded the title of “state academic”.
