The drug "Lugol" for children is available in a very convenient form - in the form of a spray. Many people remember this medication from their childhood. When a sore throat, they took a wand, wrapped a bandage on it, dipped it in medicine and smeared it with a throat. The sensations are not the most pleasant. The use of a spray can facilitate the treatment process. Allowed to use the drug "Lugol" for children up to a year.
The composition of the drug includes iodine (elemental), which has a pronounced antimicrobial property. This component is distinguished by the ability to act locally irritating to tissues. In high concentrations, elemental iodine has a cauterizing effect. The mechanism of local exposure is associated with the ability of the component to precipitate tissue proteins.
The resorptive effect of iodides (also included in the Lugol preparation) and elemental iodine is the same. In this case, the greatest severity of the effect is noted in relation to the functions of the thyroid gland. Iodides (with iodine deficiency) contribute to the stabilization of the disturbed process of connecting thyroid hormones. At a normal concentration of iodine, iodides inhibit the synthesis (compound) of thyroid hormones, sensitivity in the thyroid gland decreases, and TSH production in the pituitary gland is blocked.
Iodine preparations affect metabolic processes by enhancing dissimilation (redox decomposition in the body). In atherosclerosis, they (iodine preparations) contribute to some extent to a decrease in blood concentrations of cholesterol and beta-lipoproteins, increase the activity of blood serum, slowing down the coagulation rate.
The accumulation of iodine in syphilitic gumma contributes to softening and their further resorption. Along with this, its localization (accumulation) in tuberculous foci enhances the inflammatory process in them.
When iodine is excreted from the excretory glands, glandular tissue irritation and increased secretion are noted. This determines the expectorant effect, as well as the stimulation of lactation (in small doses).
