Facial asymmetry - causes and treatment

Unfortunately, absolutely symmetrical objects do not exist anywhere. In any subject where there are seemingly two similar parts of the same whole, there are still some inconsistencies.

The principle of symmetry operates in the human body : paired organs, two limbs on each side of the body, etc. But this principle never works with purely mathematical precision. For example, very often with righties, the right hand is slightly longer than the left. Such a mismatch of lengths occurs due to uneven use of hands - while a person performs a significant part of operations with his right hand (writing, etc.), the left rests. The left-handed asymmetry is the opposite - the right hand is shorter. Already in the womb of the mother, a person begins to manifest some asymmetry of the skull. And she, as a rule, is the reason that asymmetry of the face occurs . The reasons can also be functional - the more involved one or another part of the body, the greater the asymmetry it shows to neighboring parts of the body. For example, asymmetry in the lower jaw is usually greater than in the upper.

Facial asymmetry is not a deviation, but rather the norm. Almost completely symmetrical face is not found. Almost everyone has a slight asymmetry, and few consider this a serious drawback. Women will easily eliminate the appearance of this β€œproblem” with good makeup. However, the pronounced mismatch between the right and left parts of the face does not decorate anyone. Moreover, one of the measures of beauty is harmony, which is not promoted by the asymmetry of the face. Its causes can be combined into three groups:

  • congenital;
  • age;
  • acquired.

Acquired appear, for example, because of the habit of sleeping on the same side or because of any injuries or a serious infection. A serious asymmetry of the face is capable of creating problems with normal breathing or chewing food. The reasons for its appearance often lie in the uneven development of individual parts of the skull. The shape of the face may be distorted due to lengthening of the left or right side of it. Facial asymmetry can also be caused by a disproportion in the volume of the soft parts of the face in its different halves. If the load on the muscles of different sides of the face was uneven, then this can also cause this result. If such a mismatch of parts of the face became apparent to others, then it is worth considering its elimination. Serious asymmetry of the face does not color anyone. Its treatment depends primarily on the cause. For example, in some cases, it is enough to eliminate the curvature of the nasal septum, and the problem will be solved. Before the asymmetry of the face is eliminated, its causes must be known in detail. Without accurate information on what caused the imbalance, treatment may be ineffective.

Before starting treatment, some diagnostic measures should be taken; face asymmetry should be carefully examined. Treatment is impossible without such a diagnosis. These activities include: clinical examination, photographing the patient’s face, anthropometry, tele-radiography and tomography of the face, as well as bite examination. Only after all these measures is an accurate diagnosis possible and an explanation of the reasons for which there is an asymmetry of the face. Treatment is carried out in a hospital. It often happens that orthodontic treatment is not enough to fix the problem, because the main reason for the incorrect position of the teeth is not eliminated. Indeed, most often due to improper development of the jaw bones, asymmetry of the face occurs. Unprofessional treatment is fraught only with new problems. In some cases, in order to eliminate facial asymmetry, it is necessary to sew special facial implants into soft tissues. Surgical intervention to correct such a pathology should be carried out in a specialized clinic, by a qualified specialist and using the most modern technology. Also, in some cases, facial asymmetry is treated with botulinum toxin preparations. After the operation, the patient for some time, often for several days, should remain in a hospital under the supervision of medical personnel.
