But already in the third series of the first season, the masks were removed, and the main antagonist of the series, James Moriarty, appeared before the audience.
The role of the main rival of Sherlock was played by the young actor Andrew Scott. The creators moved a little away from the canon. Scott Moriarty is not a successful, courteous and charming professor of advanced age. The new Moriarty turned out to be a supervillain psychopath. In order to achieve his goals, he is ready to give his own life.

One of the characters, which was created specifically for the series and was not in the novels, was Molly Hooper. The pathologist, who is supposed to set off Sherlock and disappear from the screens, won the audience’s sympathy, and in the second season, Molly became part of the main cast. The role of Molly was performed by actress Louise Brilli.
Mark Gatiss
One of the creators of the series - Mark Gatiss - played the older brother of Sherlock - Mycroft Holmes. Sure, Mycroft has changed, but the traits prescribed by Doyle remain. He is still a member of the government of higher ranks and the Diogenes club, his relationship with his brother is confusing and complicated, he has little contact and hides the real level of his intelligence.
