A simple story about the patient

Ales Adamovich is an author writing about individual episodes of World War II. He is also known as the author of the film ā€œFranz + Polinaā€, another film adaptation of this topic. In his ā€œKhatyn Storyā€ he refers to the place and event, forever immortalized by the memorial complex as a symbol of suffering and national grief. The plot of the film ā€œGo and Seeā€ is largely based on documentary facts that have found historical reflection in reality.

Perhaps this was the reason for the recognition of the picture. Real events are more easily perceived. Using the example of a protagonist growing up in a matter of days, the author (together with the director Elem Klimov) demonstrates the horrors of ordinary people trapped in German fascists. A punitive action is taking place on the territory of Belarus, during which hundreds of civilians are killed alive. All this is being watched by a boy named Fleur. He used to be a cheerful teenager, and after what he saw turned into a gray-haired old man ...

The plot of the movie ā€œGo and Seeā€ is truly impressive. The viewers who watched the picture admitted: looking at the experienced fears of the village people driven into the "barn of death", it was impossible to restrain emotions.

How are masterpieces created

The idea of ā€‹ā€‹the future picture arose from the director for a long time. A native of Stalingrad, Elem Klimov wanted to make such a movie all his life. Military topics from childhood were deposited in consciousness when his little one was evacuated along the Volga with adults. He sat in a boat and looked at the set fire to the city, blazing with bright flame along the coast. Survived impressions became something of a duty that the director vowed to fulfill.

That there was no fascism ...

Some milestones of World War II remained on the pages of the past, and few remember the events in Belarus. Klimovā€™s film ā€œGo and Seeā€ is about that period of history. ā€œKhatyn storyā€ by Adamovich became the starting point in creating the picture. According to the director, the author managed to convey the horrors of occupation and widespread genocide. Preparing the tape for rental, Klimov understood the level of rigidity with which the material will be supplied. Somewhere a thought flickered: the movie will be banned, no one will see it. Fortunately, this did not happen. The Khatyn film ā€œGo and Seeā€ is not just another evidence of the war. This is a prayer for peace left for future generations.

Shooting difficulties

It took more than seven years to put the plan into practice. Production problems every time forced to postpone shooting. Klimov has already looked after the leading actors, but over the years of inactivity they have grown markedly.

He still needed a regular teenage boy who could naturally embody the key image in Go and See. Candidate actors came to auditions in droves, but the director was not looking for a professional. The casting was thorough. It was to Fleur that Klimov assigned the main tasks, because not so much the horrors of the war as their awareness was the first priority.

Alexey Kravchenko, who is familiar to modern viewers from the TV series ā€œSpecial Forcesā€ and ā€œBroā€, was not going to participate in the film. It so happened that he came to the casting with his friend as ā€œmoral supportā€ and really liked Klimov. To the surprise of those present, Kravchenko naturally wept, playing one of the scenes. The artistic council of the picture, led by the director, instantly approved it for the role.

Dramatic debut

The image of a village teenager was the first in the career of Kravchenko. According to the actor, the film ā€œGo and Seeā€ made a strong impression on him. The description of the picture comes down to the story of Flera, who left for the partisan detachment. Together with the girl Glasha, he watches the Nazis enter the village, and after checking the documents they begin to openly scoff at the residents. Particularly difficult were the scenes in which officers were allowed to leave the barn for those who had no children, but no one wanted to become a ā€œtraitorā€. In this, according to critics, an important message is concentrated: if you die, then the whole village.

The teacher who survived the war

Who else got into the movie ā€œGo and Seeā€? The actors are also represented by Olga Mironova, who played the aforementioned Glasha. Klimov did not require mastery of performance. In Mironova, he saw the depth of personal experiences. Not everyone can play a ā€œpureā€ game in tragic circumstances. After the release of the film, Olga Mironova became the star of the screen. ā€œGo and seeā€ is her only film work. Today Olga is engaged in teaching activities.

The film ā€œGo and Seeā€: actors and supporting roles

According to the initial idea, Elem Klimov planned to attract famous actors, but quickly abandoned the idea. He clearly defined the principle of work - to create the most realistic environment on the set, involving non-professionals who can truly express emotions.

The Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve was chosen as the place of work, where the necessary scenery was specially built. Klimov invited Kazimir Rabetskiy to the role of the village headman, who was burnt alive by the Germans. This man is a real villager who passed events in Khatyn. The emotional scene of the dying monologue was shot with a single take. When editing the film, the director did not find the need for its re-voice. He later called Rabetsky a man who completed the ā€œacting featā€.

People from other countries took part in the tape. So, the heroes named Kosach and Rubezh were played by Lithuanian actors Lubomyras Laucevičius and Vladas Bagdonas, and Estonian Juri Lumiste starred as a German officer. The composition also includes Soviet stars - Evgeny Tilicheeva, Alexander Berdu, Vasily Domrachev, Evgeny Kryzhanovsky, as well as a large number of extras actors who played the villagers.

The fictional model of hell

What did the audience remember the film ā€œGo and Seeā€? Reviews who looked at the picture mentioned many complex psychological scenes that left an indelible imprint. These include mockery of local residents, arson of the barn with special cynicism, when the Germans at the same time listen to music and applaud, pleased with themselves, shooting from different types of weapons, as well as posing in front of the camera against a burning barn. As for Flera, who is watching what is happening, the director used a very dramatic move: the main character literally turns gray before his eyes, slowly turning into an old man.

Mass evil

By definition, the film ā€œGo and Seeā€ could not do without an impressive concentration of violence and cruelty. Reviews from the audience indicate that not only the evil reigning in the village is demonstrated in the picture. The very negative energy of the events takes a symbolic connotation. It is especially noticeable in the scene when the shocked Fleur moves through the swamp. A lot of sounds and noises sound in his head, the occupiers seem to him, but he continues to walk, overcoming obstacles. On the contrary, there are no fascists in this place, but there is still evil that puts internal psychological pressure on it.

The obvious intention of the authors

Can the idea of ā€‹ā€‹the creators be considered noble to show the inhuman face of fascism? It is likely that people never forget about it and that this does not happen again, the film ā€œGo and Seeā€ serves as a living reminder. Critics' reviews are unanimous: no doubt, this is a powerful picture with a deep emotional impact, designed for the general public (age restrictions exist for children under 16 years of age).

Throughout the narrative, the terrifying episodes of fascist evil were so formed, concentrated in the film, that the final scenes leading to the culmination of the whole story include a protective mechanism in the audience. In their opinion, an excessive number of hard scenes weakened perception, in comparison, for example, with dead bodies seen at the beginning of the picture, which caused the first powerful impulse. Does this mean that the director oversaturated the picture with episodes? It is difficult to say for sure, since each viewer independently sets the boundaries of perception. One thing is obvious: every strong scene hits hard.

The film ā€œGo and see.ā€ Reviews, general impressions

It is impossible not to agree that the presented tape captivates the acting component. The picture itself rests on Fleur, leaving only his key character. Looking at the talent of an inexperienced 15-year-old teenager, one wonders at his ability to let others suffer through himself. The following fact will become curious: the actor had to go on a diet, lose a lot of weight, and he was carried away by long-distance running, giving birth to an exhausted child.

Fleur, the hero of the film ā€œGo and See,ā€ would cause difficulty for each actor, but Kravchenko did a great job. Olga Mironova in the image of Glasha does not feel so confident. Moreover, it seems that the authors did not work out its place in the plot. Its importance for the picture is not entirely clear. The girl seems to be, but does not fit into the frame. The remaining characters are spelled out minimally - the plot does not require the disclosure of their characters, they are largely united by a common episode.

The reality reflected in the film, in reality, is more terrible and cruel. However, the artistic effect is fully recreated. In contrast to the troubles and horrors that exceed the threshold of pain and compassion, the visual picture left a pleasant impression. Cinematography was noted: general panoramic plans, open spaces of nature.

Nothing is forgotten, nobody is forgotten

Recognized as the best picture of 1987, the Russian film ā€œGo and Seeā€ is a powerful tool that strikes the audienceā€™s mind. Having a highly artistic value, it also contains individual scenes tearing the soul apart. Without setting an example of spectacular gaming scenes designed for box office, we have the opportunity to see a real war, the kind that our country remembered. The tape has every chance of driving into depression and spoil the mood. But this is the only way to influence the viewer, showing terrifying fear, but the fear is genuine.

Undoubtedly, the film ā€œGo and Seeā€ provoked the strongest feelings and powerful aftertaste, which can hardly be called pleasant. Actors and roles, as a reflection of terrible events, made a deep impression on the audience of modern and those who will see the picture in the relative future. Such a movie must be watched at least in order to remember.

Other Russian films with a similar history of punitive operations include ā€œAscensionā€ (1976), ā€œCheck on the roadsā€ (1971), ā€œOrdinary fascismā€ (1965), as well as modern paintings ā€œBurnt by the Sun 2ā€ (2010), ā€œFranz + Polinaā€ (2006).
