List of staff and items at Hogwarts

Hogwarts is a school of sorcery and magic. Within its walls, young wizards and sorceresses are taught the basics of magic. Starting from the third year, additional classes are added to the main subjects, which students choose independently. Also, all young wizards pass mandatory exams that demonstrate the level of knowledge gained.

What subjects do young sorcerers study at Hogwarts?

Class Lists

In the first years of study, all students at Hogwarts study the following subjects:

  • astronomy
  • spells
  • protection from the dark arts;
  • potions;
  • history of magic;
  • traumatology;
  • transfiguration;
  • broomstick flying.

At the end of the second year of study, students should choose two new subjects, the study of which will begin with the third year. You can choose from the following list of school subjects at Hogwarts:

  • ancient runes;
  • muggle science;
  • numerology;
  • divination
  • care for magical creatures.

Of course, not all subjects at Hogwarts are described in detail in books. The following classes were considered the most important and difficult:

  • spells
  • protection against dark arts;
  • potions;
  • transfiguration.

Travology, divination, and care for magical creatures are also often mentioned, although these subjects are not considered too complex and important for further training after Hogwarts.

Exams

At the end of the fifth year of study in all subjects studied at Hogwarts, they pass exams - OWL (standards for teaching magic). Based on the grades received, students choose what they will study in the future. Hogwarts has a special rating system:

  • "excellent";
  • "higher than expected";
  • "satisfactorily";
  • "weakly";
  • "disgusting";
  • "troll".

Having passed the OWL, students can finish school. Of course, in order to master the prestigious profession, most continue to study further. In the seventh year, students pass the TOAD (terribly academic brilliant certification). Examinations are evaluated by a special commission, and the results are sent to students using owl mail or announced immediately after passing the exam.

Spells

One of the main items at Hogwarts is spells. For spells, Latin or the mother tongue of the students can be used. They are also divided into two groups:

  • verbal ones are those that are spoken aloud;
  • nonverbal - they are pronounced mentally, this requires a lot of concentration.

The complexity of this subject is that all movements of the wand and words must be repeated exactly, otherwise you may not get the desired effect from the spell.

The teacher of this course is Professor Flitwick, who is also the dean of Ravenclaw. His lessons are more relaxed than McGonagall and Snape. Professor Flitwick stands out among other teachers: he is very short. In order for students from the last desks to be visible, he stands on a stack of books.

Flitwick is known for his sense of humor. He always encourages students to experiment in his lessons. He treated not only the Ravenclaws, but also students from other faculties. Thanks to his knowledge and benevolent character, he enjoys well-deserved authority among students and teachers.

Dark Arts Defense

One of the complex and basic subjects at Hogwarts is protection from the Dark Arts. In this course, students learn how to protect themselves from dementors, boggarts, werewolves, and other dangerous creatures. This lesson also teaches you how to defend yourself from unforgivable spells and attacks of dark wizards.

Most of the classes are devoted to practice, because most teachers believe that this way students will be able to master the protection from the Dark Arts. The only exception was Dolores Umbridge, who paid attention to the study of theory - she believed that children did not need practice, since no one would attack them.

It was noteworthy that no one lingered on the post of teacher of this discipline for more than a year. Here is a list of professors of defense against the Dark Arts:

  1. Professor Quirell. Helped the Dark Lord, wanted to find a philosopher's stone. He died in the dungeon.
  2. Goldilocks Lokons. He pretended to be a skilled wizard. I lost my memory. He was in the hospital of St. Mungo.
  3. Remus Lupine He left the school of his own free will, when everyone found out that he was a werewolf.
  4. Terrible Eye Moody. Turned out to be Barty Crouch Jr., was exposed and was subjected to a kiss by the Dementor.
  5. Dolores Umbridge. She tried to introduce a dictatorship at Hogwarts, forbade the use of spells during lessons. She was fired from school.
  6. Severus Snape. He became the director of the school, but because of the hostile professors and students left it.
  7. Amicus Carrow. He was a Death Eater, then ended up in Azkaban.

When Voldemort was defeated, one person began to occupy the position of teacher, and several times a year he lectured there Harry Potter.

Potions

Also one of the required subjects studied at Hogwarts is potions. Pupils study the composition of various potions, what properties they possess and how to properly prepare them. Potions are a very complex subject, because it is very important to follow the potions recipe, otherwise it can lead to irreparable consequences.

One of the potions teachers was Severus Snape. There was always silence in his lessons, he was very strict with his students. Snape was sure that few would appreciate this item. Severus had great potion skills, and he was also dean of Slytherin.

Another teacher of this discipline was Horace Slughorn. He held the position of teacher until Severus Snape. Horace loved to surround himself with talented youth and even created the "Club of Slugs". After Severus Snape, Slughorn again returned to this post (after the entreaties of Dumbledore and Harry Potter).

Horace liked to surround himself with “useful” people. The origin of the wizard was not important to him - if communication with him was beneficial, he maintained acquaintance with him. Slughorn was also talented in potions. During the Battle of Hogwarts, he proved himself to be a brave wizard.

Transfiguration

One of the required subjects at Hogwarts School is transfiguration. On it, students learn how to turn one object into another, transitions from one state to another, the disappearance and creation of new objects. This discipline is extremely difficult, requiring concentration and a certain level of magic skill.

Two teachers of transfiguration are known - this is Albus Dumbledore, who then became the director of Hogwarts and Professor Minerva McGonagall, who replaced him. She became his deputy and dean of Gryffindor. Professor McGonagall is a strict teacher, she is smart and respected among students and other professors. Minerva is a powerful sorceress and animagus (can turn into a cat).

Travology

In the course of traumatology, students study various plants and their properties. Classes are held in greenhouses. Particular attention is paid to dangerous plants: not only their characteristics are studied, but also ways to neutralize them.

The professor of herbal medicine was Professor Stable, who also served as dean of the Hufflepuff faculty. This is a friendly, slightly untidy woman of small stature. The thing is that she spends a lot of time in a greenhouse with plants. Professor Stable is a connoisseur of herbology. She copes with any plants perfectly. Her best student was Neville Longbottom, who later began to teach this subject.

Divination

At divination, students studied various ways of divining and interpreting dreams. But not all wizards took this course seriously.

Harry Potter liked this item the least. Dumbledore made Sibyl Trelawney a teacher of divination. Although she did not possess clairvoyance, it was Trelawney who made that famous prophecy about Harry Potter.

Then the centaur Florenz began to prophesy. He shared the courses with Professor Trelawney. Some thought that the lessons of Florenc were more interesting, the lessons of Trelawney.

Care for magical creatures

Care for magical creatures is not mandatory, so it is studied only from the third course. On it, students will learn how to communicate with various animals and how to care for them. The teacher in this lesson is Rubeus Hagrid, a forester at the Hogwarts School. He loves to care for animals, especially for their dangerous species. It was one of Harry Potter's favorite items at Hogwarts. And all because Hagrid led him.

The article provides a short list of what subjects at Hogwarts are studied by young wizards. All teachers know their subject well, and some also have exceptional abilities, so it is not surprising that the Hogwarts school has released many famous and truly great wizards.
