Theater History
Theater named after Gorky (Simferopol) was founded in 1920 by a big fan of theatrical art, the merchant Volkov. He rented a huge barn and staged plays based on the works of such playwrights as Sumarokov, Fonvizin and Ozerov. The barn was rebuilt several times.
In 1873 it was destroyed, and in its place a real theater building with 410 seats was built. Since 1888, the theater became known as the Simferopol Noble Theater. Since 1920, it was renamed the First Soviet Theater. Within its walls, social life actively developed, discussions were held, outstanding people spoke with their ideas.
Theater named after Gorky (Simferopol) was not indifferent to the political life of that time. In 1921, the first of its kind congress of councils of various deputies was held in the theater walls. The years 1943-1944 fell into occupation, and the theater took an active part in the political life of the country: members of the underground group Sokol gathered here. The underground members conducted active reconnaissance, remained in contact with the partisans of the Crimea.
The fraternity also created a walled-up secret room where a collection of beautiful historical costumes was kept, the number of which reached 5000. The goal was to prevent the Germans from stealing and taking the collection away. However, 3 days before the liberation of the city, someone betrayed their own, the soldiers entered a walled-up hiding place and shot innocent actors who boldly defended Gorky's Russian theater until the last.
Simferopol remembered this feat, and in memory of the heroes the play "They were actors" was written, which received many honorary prizes and medals, and the film of the same name was shot on it. Before the retreat, the Germans set fire to the theater, but, fortunately, it was saved by the surviving underground. At that time, Crimea joined Russia, and most of the board of the theater supported this.
