Kafka, The Process. Summary. Joseph's arrest and preliminary investigation
Waking up on his thirtieth birthday, Joseph K. found that he was arrested.
Instead of a maid with breakfast, a stranger in black robes entered Mr. K.’s room and announced the arrest of Joseph. The man is sure that this is just a hoax and a wicked joke. He is sure that he did not commit anything illegal, and is very surprised that in the rule of law an arbitrariness incomprehensible to him is allowed, as well as unreasonable actions of people in black in relation to him.
Joseph discovered that among the men who detained him were his colleagues. Soon they informed Mr. K. that he could go to work and live in his usual rhythm of life, since so far only a preliminary investigation was being conducted.
Mr. K. continues to live quietly and struggles to forget that ridiculous incident, but he was informed by telephone that a preliminary investigation was scheduled on Sunday in his case. It is worth noting that Joseph was not informed of the appointed time or place. By phone, only the address of the outskirts of the city was indicated.
On Sunday, Mr. K. went in search of a designated place, and, surprisingly to himself, knocking on an apartment that he accidentally came across, he got the exact address.
The judge told Joseph that he was late for a whole hour and five minutes, to which K. answered him: "But still he came." After that, Mr. K. began speaking before the court. His words were full of logic as well as persuasiveness. The crowd clearly liked the performance of Joseph. After the monologue, the man took his hat and left.
Over time, Joseph begins to notice that everything around him is not the same as before. Mr. K. does not understand why all the people around him are aware of the “process." Even those with whom he is not familiar have heard about the Joseph case.
K. completely lost peace. He became distracted, inattentive, and gloomy. Joseph constantly feels tired, and soon he is overcome by a cold. It seems to the man that with all his actions he gives cause for discontent, because of which he himself is dissatisfied with everything he does.
Thirty First Birthday
On the eve of his thirty-first birthday, two men in black robes came to Joseph and took him with them. Staying at an abandoned quarry, strangers took off his jacket and shirt from Mr. K., and then laid him on a stone. Joseph did not resist, but there were a lot of thoughts in his head. He thought that perhaps there were some arguments that would help him stay alive.
One stranger’s hands were on Joseph’s neck, while another man plunged a knife into Mr. K.’s heart.
