Part I
Twelve-year-old boy Proshka works as a “spit” in the lapidary workshop of the city suburb. He has the darkest corner, where he spends the whole day turning a circle for turning stones. In addition to him, four more work in the workshop: the old cutter Ermilych, the gloomy silent master Ignatius, the lively young apprentice Spirka, the dumb worker Levka from birth. Masters work, discussing their master, Aleksey Ivanovich Ukhov, who is known for being a rogue with customers, and his workers are starving and starving. The master is withering at his work, and he still pretends to be sympathetic. And he promises: he is about to make the workers live better. And instead of this old bathhouse, they’ll build a workshop, and he will order lunches better to cook. But, of course, does nothing.

Part II
July, eleven in the morning, the sun is shining. Proshka is very hungry. He saw a piece of meat in the kitchen and now dreams of cabbage soup with beef. Closing his eyes, he spins his wheel and dreams. His dreams are interrupted by the visit of an elegant rich lady with two children, accompanied by the owner. She came to show the children how precious stones are made, but was struck by the appearance of a wretched and dirty workshop. But Proshka regretted, saying: "How thin he is!". The lady bought some stones and asked that Proshka bring them home to her.
Part III
In a brief summary of the third part of Mamin-Sibiryak’s “Skewer” story, it must be reported that Proshka, working, thinks how glorious it would be to escape from the Ukhov workshop. Build a hut in the woods among the greenery, make a fire and live free.
Before going to the lady, Proshka was forced to put on a new shirt and wash himself. The proshka started to grow, but when he came home to the lady, he got used to it. He met the frivolous, lazy and kind boy Volodya, the son of Anna Ivanovna, and she ordered to feed Proshka and suddenly decided that she would teach him to read and write on Sundays.
Before Christmas Proshka did not come to the next lesson. He got sick, he started consuming. But, ashamed of eating a free host's bread, he continued to work at the wheel, although it was very difficult for him. In those days, consumption (tuberculosis) was considered a very dangerous disease, Proshka soon became ill. And then he was gone.
Anna Ivanovna came to Proshka’s funeral. She reproached herself that she could not help Proshka, and cried about all the poor children who had such a difficult fate.
