Methyluracil ointment - applications and dosage

Methyluracil ointment belongs to the group of drugs that stimulate the regeneration processes in tissues. It has high anti-catabolic and anabolic activity, anti-inflammatory, as well as an immunostimulating effect.
It is used for various injuries of the skin: burns, poorly healing wounds, diaper rash, boils and abscesses. It can also be recommended for the care of bedridden patients, as a preventive and therapeutic agent.

Methyluracil ointment is used in the treatment of trophic ulcers, bone fractures and photodermatitis. In the latter case, the drug has a healing and protective effect.

Indications for use inside are leukopenia (including those resulting from radiation therapy), anemia, peptic ulcer, agranulocytic tonsillitis, hepatitis, pancreatitis, severe poisoning with benzene fumes.

Analogues of methyluracil ointment are Levosin and Levomekol.

Composition, methods of application, dosage

Methyluracil ointment contains 100 mg of the active substance (dioxomethyl tetrahydropyrimidine), the fat base is lanolin and petrolatum.
The drug is applied twice a day to damaged areas of the skin. With external use, this drug practically does not penetrate into the bloodstream, so that side effects are minimized. Extremely rarely observed individual intolerance to the drug, accompanied by redness of the skin and severe itching.

In the treatment of wounds and burns, methyluracil ointment is combined with antibiotics of the sulfonamide group and antiseptic drugs.

When taken orally, the dosage is calculated based on the age of the patient. So, children from 3 to 8 years old are recommended no more than 250 mg (four to six times a day), children from 8 to 12 years old - 350 mg, adolescents and adults - 500 mg. The course of treatment for gastrointestinal diseases is from thirty to forty days. The drug contributes to the normalization of nucleic acid metabolism in the mucosa, due to which ulcers heal.

Side effects: headaches, heartburn, weakness, allergic reactions.

Contraindications: myeloid leukemia, hemoblastosis, leukemia (leukemic form).

It should be noted that the spectrum of use of this drug is quite wide. Gynecologists, proctologists, dentists, ophthalmologists and pediatricians willingly use it.

Often methyluracil ointment for children and adults is prescribed for the treatment of stomatitis. In addition to the wound healing effect, the drug has an immunomodulating effect, which is especially important in cases of fungal and viral infections. Methyluracil ointment is used, as a rule, in combination with interferon and a solution of chlorhexidine.

In the treatment of eye diseases, the drug is used as an adjuvant. For example, with purulent inflammation of the eyelid (phlegmon), methyluracil ointment is used in combination with solutions of antiseptics externally.

In the treatment of hemorrhoids, methyluracil is administered rectally in the form of suppositories or microclysters (25 ml of starch paste for 4 mg of active substance). The drug does not have an irritating effect on tissues, therefore it is well tolerated by patients. However, after insertion into the anus , a short burning sensation may occur.
In the period of exacerbation, to alleviate the patient's condition, it is recommended to combine ointment or suppositories with a wound healing effect and local anesthetics.

I would like to add that methyluracil ointment is also used in cosmetology. For example, many experts recommend it as a fairly effective post-pilling tool. According to the reviews of those who used this drug, skin recovery is significantly accelerated, and discomfort is minimized. By the way, methyluracil significantly reduces pores. This information is useful to owners of oily, sagging skin.
