Who is Barry Trotter?

When any cult product comes to light, whether it be a book or a film, a lot of parodies necessarily follow after it. Some of them are completely mediocre, others are worthy of the attention of the viewer. In this article, we will tell you about a parody of the famous "Harry Potter".

Michael Gerber - author of a sensational parody

"Barry Trotter" is a parody of a series of books about Harry Potter. The author not only outplayed the plot of the book, but also made the name of the protagonist in tune. Currently, the series includes three books, the first of which is called "Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody."

Pun

Parody "Barry Trotter" is based more on a pun. For example, the name of the protagonist, “Barry,” translates to “cool,” and his last name is “pork legs.” The school itself, in which Harry studied, has transformed from Hogwarts to Hryugvarts, which literally means "slops." But the name of the director Alpus Dolbimdur means "loser." The followers of the main villain call themselves earth-eaters. Allegedly, as a sign of devotion they were forced to eat land.

Of course, almost all fans of the famous fairy tale do not like such fan fiction. But it is worth noting that the author wanted to either make a joke or make money by selling books. Or both. In any case, Barry Trotter and Harry Potter are two completely different works. And the parody clearly does not reach the original with either an idea or a plot.

Barry Trotter and Shameless Parody

Barry Trotter book and film

Because of his fame, Barry could go to school as much as he wanted. Since childhood, a scar in the form of exclamation and question marks has remained on his forehead. But everything changes when the journalist Rawlins (in tune with the surname Rowling) begins to write articles about the imminent release of a film about Barry Trotter. The novel itself reaches the point of absurdity when Barry Trotter and Lord Votobormot fall into various comic situations.

At the end of the book, the school explodes, its wreckage is sold to fans of the film, and a new educational institution is built up with the money raised, but in a modern form. Barry's girlfriend becomes his wife, and Lon Walesley becomes the new principal of the school. At the end of the book, everything is displayed as if it was written by Barry Trotter himself. The second book contains a small reference to the popular series Doctor Who.

Only the first two books were translated into Russian. The third book, Barry Trotter and the Dead Horse, was not translated into Russian due to the low popularity of the first two, much less published and not sold.

Barry Trotter and Harry Potter

In early 2002, there was information that, perhaps, the film would be shot on the plot of the first book about Barry Trotter, as producers were interested in it. Probably such a movie would bring a lot of money and popularity to its author, but so far the book has not been made into films.

Accusations of plagiarism

Many major publishers refused to release Michael Gerber's books on Barry Trotter. This was primarily due to their fears of being persecuted by lawyers of the writer Rowling Joan for plagiarism. As a result, the author decided to release the book at his own expense. And at the end of 2002, more than fifty thousand copies of this fan fiction were sold. After a lengthy examination by literary scholars, lawyers decided to refuse to file a lawsuit for plagiarism.
