What is a phonogram: subtleties and nuances

Many Russian performers, such as Irina Allegrova, Olga Buzova, Sofia Rotaru, perform exclusively under the phonogram. In the West, things are different; they prefer live sound. But Britney Spears and Cher, apparently, are equal to the stars of domestic pop. In our concept, a phonogram is a prerecorded song; under it, an artist opens his mouth, imitating a live performance.

What is a phonogram?

The phonogram has Greek roots and means a record that was stored on sound media. Do not confuse it with a “minus-phonogram”. It is also called "backing track", it is a slang term in the music industry. The bottom line is that it is as close as possible to the original without soloing vocals, but with prescribed backing. This type is used by artists in prefabricated concerts, where there is no possibility and time for rehearsing and setting up equipment. And also in theaters, when an artist who plays the main solo role, for some reason can not play. Most often, stars use phonograms of songs, that is, they record the entire track with all the vocals and during the performance they simply create the illusion of a live performance. It is convenient, fast and cheap.

Phonogram classification

Phonograms are classified according to their type, characteristics of stored information and recording principles. It depends on the type of signal whether it will be a phonogram - analog or digital.

The main characteristic is always considering the presence in the phonogram of information about the spatial distribution of sound sources. In this connection, there is the following classification of phonograms:

  • Monaural - they use one recording channel and there is no information about the common location.
  • Multichannel.
  • Stereo - there are already two recording channels, this includes stereo systems with a separate monaural channel for low frequencies.

By the way a phonogram is recorded, the following types are distinguished:

  • magnetic - recording on magnetic tapes;
  • photographic - on film;
  • mechanical - record on vinyl records;
  • optical - on CD or DVD audio discs;
  • electronic.
