In addition to humans, the pathogen was found in domestic animals, in particular in dogs. Dirofilaria is transmitted in a transmissible way, through mosquito bites. These insects swallow the parasite larvae with the blood of an animal or human. There are 2 varieties of the pathogen: Dirofilaria repens and immitis. The first appears only as worms under the skin. The second parasitizes in the internal organs, causing severe complications. Currently, only Dirofilaria repens was found in humans, which is less life-threatening. There are synonyms of the disease among the people, such as “living” or “evil thread”.
Morgelon virus
According to other sources, the worm under the skin of a person is a manifestation of another mysterious pathology, the causative agent of which is a previously unknown virus or fungus. Scientists claim that she came from France and was named after the names of the people who were first struck - Morgelon's disease. After this, the pathology swept the United States and Western Europe, and then the whole world. Common among both theories is that the disease affects people with significantly reduced immunity.
Symptoms of pathology
Despite the fact that the etiology remains not fully understood, the signs of the disease are the same. The main manifestation of dirofilariasis, like the Morgelon virus, is worms under the skin. They noticeably act on various parts of the body, have the ability to move freely from one area to another. At first, patients take the parasite for a voluminous formation, but with its movements they are horrified, realizing that someone is alive in their skin. Usually only one pathogen enters the body, but in rare cases, several larvae can penetrate at once. If this disease is the mysterious Morgelon’s disease, then, in addition to discomfort under the skin, the patient experiences severe itching and pain in the area where the worm lives. This area of the skin begins to become inflamed, suppurate, and bleed. After this, ulcerative defects of the skin are formed, and the pathogen is looking for a new place for destruction.
Disease treatment
Currently, there is no definite answer to the question of how to get rid of this ailment. However, worms living under human skin must be destroyed. Parasitologists argue that surgical intervention in this case is irrational due to the ability of the pathogen to move. In their opinion, the disease must be treated conservatively, having an effect directly on dirofilaria. Scientists who are prone to fungal etiology recommend appropriate therapy. The effects of various drugs are under study. Nevertheless, thanks to antifungal agents, Morgelon’s disease is gradually weakening, there are fewer areas of affected skin.
