Evgeny Bazarov is the main character of Turgenev’s novel “Fathers and Sons”. He can rightly be considered an extraordinary, outstanding personality with a tragic fate. The image of Bazarov in the novel is presented by the author very vividly, as if we see before us this powerful, bold, straightforward man with big red hands. Unfortunately, the hero’s life was too short for his full self-realization. In order to assess the scale of the personality of this character, we will try to recall what his education, upbringing was, how all this could affect his character.

Parents of Bazarov

Evgeny Bazarov is the son of a county doctor and noblewoman. His parents, Vasily Ivanovich and Arina Vlasyevna, love their son, and Eugene, although he behaves with restraint, even severely, has the most tender feelings for them. They were the ones who carried out the education of Bazarov. In the novel “Fathers and Sons” little is said about parents, but this is enough to understand how much Eugene is dear to them, what the scene of their meeting is worth.

Bazarov’s father is trying very hard to look modern in his son’s eyes; he is afraid to seem boring to him during their meeting, which occurred after three years of separation. The case of Vasily Ivanovich, apparently, helped to determine the young man in life, he also became a doctor. No matter how the son relates to his father, he was the one who carried out the education of Bazarov. In the novel "Fathers and Sons," Eugene is a supporter of doing business, which must be useful. Bazarov's mother, Arina Vasilyevna, is a noblewoman by birth. She is fussy, uneducated, old-fashioned, strongly believes in God. The education and upbringing of Bazarov from a very early age becomes his own concern. He is committed to development. Eugene, as you know, was not the son of wealthy parents, so he earns on education himself. The medical profession, of course, captivates Bazarov. He loves to work, does not tolerate idleness. The meaning of human life, in his opinion, is to bring benefits.

Views on social structure

The “noble” origin of Bazarov (he is a commoner) shows that the importance of the nobility in public life is fading into the background. Aristocrats, according to the protagonist, are not capable of action. The author of the work admits that in his novel he wanted to emphasize the failure of the nobility.

Bazarov deeply shares the ideas of nihilism. He denies the social foundations, values, achievements of culture. He does not appreciate the beauty of nature.

To be or to seem?

How often do we try to seem different from what we really are. It seems to us that this way we will be better, more attractive.

Bazarov deep down is a kind and sensitive person. Perhaps with age, he would have become like his caring father, Vasily Ivanovich.

Carried away by the ideas of nihilism, Bazarov puts on a mask of a cynic. He rejects everything that is of no practical use. However, life in a striking way makes a person see in himself those qualities that he is trying to hide from himself and others. Denying love, Eugene nevertheless discovers a strong feeling for Anna Odintsova. Trying to avoid parents, Bazarov comes to the understanding that they are the best people on Earth.

The novel ends with the death of the protagonist. The principles by which he lived turned out to be untenable, and new ideals never appeared.

According to the author, the continued existence of Bazarov was impossible, because he denied the universal values that allow us to live.
