Analgesic drug "Ketorolac": instructions for use

A fairly wide range of painkillers containing such an active substance as ketorolac tromethamine is sold in pharmacies under the names Ketanov, Ketorolac, Ketorol. The instruction for use placed here on the Ketorolac preparation is for informational purposes. The medicine is prescribed by a doctor to relieve pain after a variety of injuries, postoperative and postpartum pain, with colic of bile or renal origin, as well as with oncological pain. The drug is available both in tablets of 10 mg, and in the form of a solution for injection. One dose of the drug for injection is 30 mg.

For the Ketorolac pain medication, the instructions for use indicate the following rules. For children under 16 years of age, the drug is not prescribed. Dosage is calculated depending on body weight. If the weight exceeds 50 kg, then a starting dose of 20 mg is prescribed, and after it, 10 mg is regularly taken up to four times a day. But the daily dose should not exceed 40 mg. If the drug is administered parenterally, then up to 30 mg intravenously or intramuscularly may be administered every six hours. The duration of use of the drug "Ketorolac" application instruction limits five days.

Side effects include disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, diarrhea. Stomatitis and dry mouth are possible. The central nervous system, exposed to the drug, can react with imbalance, anxiety or drowsiness, dizziness appear. Allergic skin manifestations, such as rash and itching, sudden sweating, are possible. In some cases, there is an increase in body weight, edema.

Like many painkillers, the instruction “Ketorolac” imposes certain restrictions and contraindications. The use of this type of pain medication for children under 16 years of age is strongly not recommended. Pregnant and lactating women are also prohibited from taking this medication. Contraindications include all disorders of blood coagulation, ulcerative lesions of the stomach and duodenum, especially if there are bleeding, bronchial asthma, and a number of other diseases. With increased sensitivity to the medication, it is also recommended to choose a medicine of another group.

Despite the fact that the instructions for use do not say anything about the interaction of alcohol with the Ketorolac preparation, common sense suggests that it is better to refrain from taking strong drinks during treatment. It is important to understand that this tool is intended for short-term use in order to eliminate acute pain at the very beginning of the postoperative period or at the beginning of the treatment of injuries of a different nature. For long-term use, softer and more gentle means are selected.

There is no evidence of an acute overdose of Ketorolac, however, with pronounced symptoms described in the side effects, it may be advisable to stop taking the drug until the patient returns to normal. The exception is the moments in which it is difficult to determine whether such a sign is precisely the consequence of the action of the drug, especially if it is observed during the course of the disease, the pain syndrome of which is planned to be eliminated with the help of this drug.
