Fusidic acid is an antimicrobial agent that has a bacteriostatic or bactericidal effect. The spectrum of action is associated with inhibition of protein production due to a factor that is necessary for chromosomal mutations of polypeptides and removal of the protein chain, which further leads to the elimination of the pathogen.
It shows increased activity against staphylococci, especially the golden and epidermal, as well as nocardia and clostridia.
It has the least activity against streptococci, enterococci, neisseria, bacteroids, Koch bacillus, Hansen's bacillus.
In addition, fusidic acid eliminates some protozoa, including lamblia and malarial plasmodia.
Pharmacokinetic properties
After oral administration and intravenous administration is distributed throughout the body. Fusidic acid accumulates in purulent exudate, pathological secretion, as well as synovial fluid, bone tissue, burn scabs, brain abscesses in dosages exceeding the minimum concentration of a substance for staphylococci (0.03-0.16 micrograms per milliliter). It is exchanged in the liver. It is excreted mainly with bile, a small amount - with urine.
Indications
The drug is prescribed for the following conditions and diseases:
- Septicemia (blood poisoning, in which there is a failure of the general condition of the body due to inflammation).
- Pneumonia (damage to the lung tissue, usually an infectious etiology with predominant damage to the alveoli and connective tissue of the lung).
- Infectious and inflammatory complications of cystic fibrosis (a systemic hereditary disease caused by a gene mutation).
- Wound infection.
- Impetigo (contagious pustular skin disease, the main hallmark of which is conflict).
- Carbuncle (purulent and necrotic lesions of the skin and subcutaneous tissue around the group of hair sacs and sebaceous glands, which tends to spread rapidly).
- Folliculitis (infection of the middle and deep sections of the hair follicle, leading to its purulent inflammation).
- Common acne.
- Conjunctivitis (an inflammatory process in the mucous membrane of the eye).
- Blepharitis (bilateral inflammatory process in the ciliary edge of the eyelids).
- Barley.
What dosages do you need to take fusidic acid in?
Infants up to one year old - 50 milligrams per kilogram of weight three times a day, babies from 1 to 5 years old - two hundred and fifty milligrams three times a day, children from 5 to 12 years old - five hundred milligrams three times a day.
Adult patients and adolescents from 12 years of age - from 500 to 1000 milligrams orally three times a day. For adults, 500 mg is administered intravenously three times a day. The duration of the procedure is two hours. The maximum daily dosage for adult patients with intravenous infusion is two grams.
For external use, fusidic acid is applied in a thin layer to the skin two to three times a day for one week. When eliminating common acne, it is necessary to conduct a longer therapy.
Adverse Reactions and Contraindications
According to the instructions, fusidic acid can provoke the following unpleasant conditions:
- Jaundice (icteric staining of the skin and visible mucous cavities due to an increased content of bilirubin in the blood and tissues).
- Vomiting (contraction of the esophagus and stomach, preceding the appearance of vomiting).
- Flatulence (an increased accumulation of gases in the intestines, which is characterized by bloating, abundant release of a large amount of gas is possible).
- Disorders of the liver.
- Skin rashes.
- Dyspeptic symptoms (disturbance of the normal activity of the stomach, difficult and painful digestion).
Contraindication to the use of the drug is considered excessive sensitivity to the substance.
Can I use the drug during pregnancy?
If you need to use the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding, you need to evaluate the likely benefits for the mother and the possible risk to the fetus.
According to the instructions for use, fusidic acid crosses the placenta. Studies have found that this acid replaces the hemoglobinogenic pigment in connection with albumin. Therefore, you should avoid using the drug in the last three months of pregnancy due to the likely occurrence of nuclear jaundice in infants. This must be considered when used in babies with jaundice and acidosis.
Features
It is important to consider that the drug can be used in cases of impaired renal function and in situations where other antimicrobials are prohibited. There is no evidence of cross-over sensitivity to other antibacterial agents.
In severe infections, as well as when prolonged therapy is necessary, the acid must be combined with other antimicrobial agents acting against staphylococci in order to reduce the risk of resistance. What fusidic acid preparations are available?
Medicines
In pharmacology, there are several drugs that contain this substance in their composition, for example:
- "Futsidin G".
- "Fusiderm".
- Fucicort.
- "Futsitalmik."
- Fugentin.
- "Fusidine sodium."
The most famous fusidic acid creams are Fucicort and Fusiderm.
When used together with "Colestyramine", insoluble complexes are formed, which leads to a decrease in the acid content in the blood.
