Fans of rock music usually aspirate the name of David Coverdale. During his many years of creative career, he was lucky to be a member of two cult groups: Deep Purple and Whitesnake. This vocalist also recorded a joint album with legendary guitarist Jimmy Page from the Led Zeppelin team. A person who wants to understand rock music should definitely get acquainted with the songs of David Coverdale.
Childhood
The hero of this article was born in the English city of Saltbourne-on-Sea. At about age 14, he began to seriously engage in music and develop his vocal skills. After 2 years, in the late sixties, he was already singing in professional rock bands.
Lucky case
In 1973, David Coverdale saw an ad in Melody Maker magazine stating that Deep Purple had been auditioning for singers wishing to take the place of Ian Gillan, who had recently left the band. Then the hero of this article led a team called The Government, which in 1969 played in a concert with Deep Purple.
Therefore, he knew all the musicians from this ensemble. After David Coverdale sent his audio recordings to the band, he was invited to audition. As a result, the vocalist was accepted into Deep Purple at the same time as Glenn Hughes, who played bass and sometimes sang his own compositions.
First album
Deep Perple recorded their first album with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes in 1974. This disc is called Burn. He became gold in the United States of America. In the homeland of the musician, in the UK, the record rose to the first line of the charts. During a concert tour in support of the album, the group performed at the American festival California jam, headlined by Emerson Lake & Palmer as well. This event brought together about 400 thousand fans of rock.
A video of David Coverdadeโs concert with Deep Purple at the festival was released in 2005 on DVD. The live album recorded during the performance was called California jamming. In the early eighties, the concert was released on videotape, becoming the first such music publication.
California jam is the latest in a series of big festivals from the late sixties to the early seventies, which also included Woodstock.
Second album
The Deep Purple roster, which included David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, received the conventional name Mark 2 among the fans of the band. This model of the group was extremely prolific. At the end of the same 1974, a new album called Stormbringer was released, which received gold status in the United States and Great Britain.
The influence of funk and soul, indicated on the previous disc, has become even more noticeable here. This was one of the reasons Ritchie Blackmore left the band in June 1975.
Decay
The group was in an extremely difficult situation. Some participants expressed a desire to put an end to the story of Deep Purple. David Coverdale turned out to be the person thanks to whom the collective continued its existence. He introduced the members of the team to his acquaintance guitarist Tommy Bolin, known for his work in the band Billy Cobham.
One album was released with this musician. He was less successful commercially than his predecessors. In March 1976, two original Deep Purple members (Lord and Paice) decided to disband the group. Coverdale with tears in his eyes received this news.
Solo career
In February 1977, David Coverdale (whose photo can be seen in the article) released his first solo album. The record was called White snake. This disc consisted of songs by David Coverdeid and guitarist Micky Moody.
After the release of two solo works, the musician decided to organize a group that borrowed the name from the first album.
Faithful friends
David Coverdale bitterly experienced the disintegration of the band Deep Purple, which, according to the musician, was "his whole life." โIt was hard for me, but I understood that I needed to live and move on,โ he said in an interview.
The music of the first solo album is painted mainly in gloomy tones. One of the critics wrote that "it seemed to reflect sadness about the breakup of her favorite team."
Working in his own group, he made an attempt to partially revive Deep Purple. To do this, he invited drummer Ian Paice and keyboard player John Lord to his team. The 1980 album included the band's biggest hit, the song Fool for your loving. The musician often returned to the work of Deep Deep, performing songs from the teamโs repertoire. In 2015, Whitesnake recorded a CD consisting of songs written by Coverdale for Deep Purple.
In the early nineties, David Coverdale recorded a joint album with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.
The disc was a success in many countries of the world, despite the large number of crushing critical articles about it.
