Retrocerebellar cyst. What is it and how to treat it?

A cyst of the brain is called a volumetric neoplasm, which has a benign character. This formation is presented in the form of a bubble with liquid inside. The cyst is located between the tissues in the brain. Specialists divide these education into two varieties. Thus, there is an arachnoid and intracerebral (retrocerebellar) cyst.

The second type of benign neoplasm is formed in the area of dead parts of gray matter. A retrocerebellar cyst with fluid accumulation is presented.

To prevent the progression of the process, it is necessary to establish the cause of the condition. The formation of such intracerebral benign neoplasms is provoked by such factors as: cerebrovascular insufficiency, stroke, surgical intervention, inflammatory process, injuries. The retrocerebellar cyst does not develop on the surface or in the region of the membranes, but directly in the substance of the brain.

Pathology can develop without any pronounced manifestations or have various non-specific symptoms. The most common signs of the disease should be considered headaches, a feeling of fullness and pulsation in the head, nausea, hallucinations, vomiting, cramps. In addition, visual and hearing disorders, episodic loss of consciousness, and mental disorders are also likely.

The retrocerebellar cyst may increase in size over time. If it continues to grow, it becomes a factor in brain damage.

As a rule, the progression of pathology is associated with the ongoing processes of circulatory disorders, the formation of new foci of a microstroke, as well as with multiple sclerosis.

Before prescribing therapy, the patient undergoes the necessary examination. The diagnosis of retrocerebellar cyst is being specified.

Treatment of this benign neoplasm is possible in any case. It is aimed at eliminating the causes of formation. With an asymptomatic course and the absence of growth of the neoplasm, its neutralization is carried out without the use of surgical intervention. In the absence of severe hydrocephalus, therapeutic methods are used. At the same time, the cyst is not eliminated, however, according to some experts, a person can live comfortably with it. In other cases, you may need to use the operational method.

To date, the removal of a benign formation in the brain is carried out using the endoscopic method. Its undoubted advantage is the low invasiveness of the intervention. In addition, after an endoscopic operation, there are no complications associated with foreign objects, all effects are carried out with visual control. If there are contraindications to the use of this method of surgical intervention, a microsurgical operation or shunting is prescribed.

Absolute indications for the appointment of surgical treatment are the development and progression of focal symptoms, an increase in convulsive paroxysm, the formation of an arachnoid cyst complicated by hemorrhage, and other conditions.

It should be noted that in many cases the retrocerebellar cerebrospinal fluid cyst is detected completely by accident. As well as arachnoid, this formation may not manifest itself in any way, but will appear in a person at the age of, for example, twenty years.

Diagnostic measures include laboratory analysis of blood, CT, MRI, as well as studies of blood flow in the vascular system of the brain.
