Many generations of people in childhood read A. N. Rybakov’s novel “Dirk” - the first book of the trilogy “Dirk” / “Bronze Bird” / “Shot”. All these books are addressed to youth. The action movie genre chosen by the writer is consistent with this category of readers. The plot of the story is very dynamic, it captures from the very first minutes of reading. The topic of this article is a summary compiled by us for the above story.
Rybakova "Dagger" immediately after writing in 1948 for many years became a youth hit.
Literary peaks submitted to the author of “Cortica”
What was the previous life path of Anatoly Naumovich? The writer Rybakov (Aronov) cannot be denied either courage, business acumen, or human wisdom. At 22 years old, repressed, he was arrested in 1933, allegedly for counter-revolutionary propaganda, and already in 1941, thanks to energy and determination, he held the position of head of the Ryazan regional motor transport administration. The war went from Moscow to Berlin, becoming a major, head of the auto service of the rifle corps. The banal phrase "A talented person is talented in everything" is about Rybakov.
Demobilized in 1946, Anatoly Naumovich immediately decided to create a story. This article is an attempt to present to the reader its summary. Rybakova's “Dagger” (this is the first work of the writer) demonstrated to the general public that new powerful talent had entered into Soviet literature. Even then, it was felt that this talent was on the shoulder of the peak of the human spirit.
Today, the literary talent of the adamant writer Anatoly Rybakov is not disputed by anyone. Forever entered the treasury of world literature, his famous tetralogy "Children of the Arbat" and the landmark novel about the Jewish origins of "Heavy Sand".
Courage of talent
Recall another fact from his biography. Real talent should not tremble before the powers that be. Anatoly Naumovich was convinced of this. While working on the “Children of the Arbat” (subsequently published in 52 countries), none other than the loyal hymn writer Sergei Mikhalkov tried to put sticks in his wheels: “Do you reason for Stalin there?”
The answer from Anatoly Rybakov was immediate and comprehensive: “After all, Tolstoy argues for Napoleon!” This man, formerly repressed, at one time survived when they tried to destroy him; he did not hide from the front; did not bow his head and later - until the end of his days.
And after the war, the front-line soldier decided to write a story about the pre-war childhood, obviously, having previously written a short summary in a draft. Rybakova's "Dagger" has an absolutely unusual for Soviet literature plot and rhythm of the action movie, which, in fact, served as its popularity with readers and further contributed to the creation of the filmography of the story. After all, Anatoly Naumovich was a creative and energetic person.
Plot plot
The first part of the book introduces us to the atmosphere of the 20s of the last century. It is correct to remind the reader: the action of the story takes place precisely during the civil war, which leaves an imprint on the summary. Rybakova "Dagger" immediately, from the first scene, introduces us to the main character, the boy Misha Polyakov. This Muscovite (the author of the story is also Muscovite) is temporarily staying with his grandfathers and grandmothers in the provincial town of Revsk. Misha’s father died at the royal penal servitude, his mother, who worked from morning until late in the evening at a textile factory, had a hard time. Her parents took the boy to feed and look after.
Misha Polyakov was an active, lively child. The boy got up early that morning, from which the story "Dagger" begins. Summary (A. Rybakova cannot be blamed for tediousness) will acquaint us with the boy’s plan: to unnoticed cut off the flap from the camera, in order to finally make a coveted slingshot for himself.
At the same time, by chance, he sees something that was not intended for his eyes. And this serves as the plot of the plot of the story. It's nice, you see, to feel such a dynamism of presentation on the part of the author. At least this is promising. What does Misha see? A neighbor of his grandparents, a retired sailor Sergei Ivanovich Polevoy, is trying to hide something in an empty doghouse. This “something” turns out to be a trihedral officer dagger with a bronze snake around the bone handle.
Sailor Field
In fact, the times in Revsk were not very calm either: bandits were operating in the okrug, and the White Guards tried to break through towards the city. Intrigue of the novel "Dagger" acquires new features. Summary (A. Rybakova is distinguished by the skill of storytelling) with detective detail informs us that the leader of the bandits Valery Sigismundovich Nikitsky owns a dagger scabbard and is keen to get a blade for himself.
Obviously, some kind of secret is associated with the weapon. In the past, Nikitsky was a fleet officer on the same ship with the sailor Sergey Polev - the battleship Empress Maria. He killed the former owner of the dagger, an officer of the same ship. The sailor Polevoy tried to detain the villain, and they grappled in a fight. However, this duel took place in a battle setting, and a sudden explosion scattered them in different directions, leaving one scabbard and the other a dagger.
Mysterious Dirk
Coming along with the White Guards to Revsk, Nikitsky and his bandits are trying to get hold of the dagger, but he does not succeed. Misha is leaving for Moscow with his mother. Sailor Field gives him a dirk. The boy is hiding him in the closet. Before the donation, Sergei Ivanovich told him what he knew about the dirk.
His handle is collapsible, a plate with an engraved cipher is hidden inside. The key to this cipher, obviously, is on the sheath. The possession of both the blade and the sheath at the same time is a necessary condition in order to recognize it. He clearly reveals some kind of secret, as in mysterious stories a reserved closed door opens a password-review.
Summary (Rybakov’s “Dirk” from now on becomes even more interesting to read) will now lead us to Moscow, to the courtyard on the Arbat. There is an apartment where Misha and his mother live. The dagger blade hidden by Misha found shelter in a secluded place, in the back of the closet. However, the sailor Sergey Ivanovich Polevoy hinted to the boy that the gangster Nikitsky had an orderly who also served on the same battleship, by the name of Filin. It was a real thread for further search. The boy remembered that a man with the same last name lives in his house. He asked his aunt Agrippina Tikhonovna and found out that Filin had indeed arrived in Moscow from Revsk.

With the help of cunning, the guy also learned about the service of the Owl in the Navy. His son Borka, nicknamed Zhila (he was a huckster since childhood, traded cigarettes and sweets in the market) was able to interest in the amateur production of the play “Sailor's Life”. He brought the ribbon with the inscription "Empress Maria" for props. Thus, Misha’s guesses found a justification.
Friendship Story
And the writer certainly managed to depict the storylines of the protagonist and his peers: Genk Petrov (son of the engineer) and Slava Eldarov (son of the chief engineer of the factory). These were three comrades - do not spill water.
Nevertheless, the remarkable story was created by the writer A. N. Rybakov - “Dirk”. "As I understand it, what is true friendship" - essays on such a topic were once popular in schools. Why are we doing this? Moreover, such an essay can be written completely, taking as a basis the friendship of Mishka, Genka and Slavka. After all, the strongest friendship begins precisely from childhood and sweeps through life. Such a friendship connected the writer with his peers from the Arbat courtyard. It is no coincidence that A. Rybakov, in the image of Slavik Eldarov, introduced features of autobiography. After all, the father of Anatoly Naumovich, like Slavik, was the chief engineer in production.
Our remark
Unlike the story of Anatoly Naumovich, our summary is a story. Rybakova's “Dagger”, of course, describes the plot in more detail, more interestingly, more broadly. There are many episodes that are successful from the point of view of artistic description, which we are forced to exclude from the narrative. After all, it should, by definition, be short. In particular, we did not include in this article a description of Revsk and the events in it. We kept silent in our story about the unique courtyard atmosphere of the Arbat at the beginning of the 20th century and about the organization of the pioneer cell by three comrades: Mishka, Genka and Slavka. All this can be learned only by studying the full content. "Dirk" A. Rybakov, a master of literary words and plot construction, wrote selflessly. We are sure that after this story you will want to read both the Bronze Bird and Shot.
In Moscow. The second and third parts of the story
Let us return to the plot of the first work of A. N. Rybakov. The three comrades managed to track down that Eagle Owl in a secluded corner of the basement was storing some heavy boxes like coffins. Here, in the basement of his former batman, the leader of the gang, Nikitsky Valery Sigismundovich, also once proceeded. They both then went to the philatelic store. There, the old man, his master, kept the scabbard from the dagger. Their complex design was described by Anatoly Rybakov. A brief retelling (the work in the original describes the assembly in more detail) of what is said in the story about the sheath can be represented as follows: a rigid connection of fan-shaped opening plates (when folded - the surface of the scabbard), a ring holding them together and a ball fixing the pointed part.
The boys managed to consider the assembly process produced by the owner of the philatelic shop. To do this, they placed a fake advertising stand right in front of his shop window (fixing posters on both sides of the car, and in the middle they planted an observer). They with her help saw and heard how, once, Eagle owl, having come to the owner of the shop, for a long time discussed with him some complicated mysterious cipher.
Scabbard mastery
The guys found that the scabbard was transmitted by the owner of the shop to Filin and vice versa through Borka Filin (the son of the former batman).
In the fourth part of the story, the boys matured a plan on how to take possession of the scabbard, playing on the greed of a young huckster - Borka. At that time, when he carried the scabbard from the owner of the store to his father, the guys offered him to buy a car at a bargain price. While they were bargaining, their accomplice, a former street kid who possessed thieves' skills acquired in the past, imperceptibly pulled the sheath from Borka and then handed them over to the boys.
Fifth part. Failed Brainstorming and Sudden Help
The guys set about reading books on ciphers, but things didn’t work out ... A summary of Rybakov’s novel “Dirk” will now present to us the further logic of their search. By chance it happened that the director of the school, Aleksey Ivanovich, found out about the dirk. A teacher led the boys who were guilty of reading a book on ciphers in a lesson. Alexey Ivanovich, possessing systemic knowledge, deciphered the inscription on the blade and scabbard. She said that the handle of a blade with a snake served as a mechanical key for some watch that should have been wound up. The director understood that the matter was taking a serious turn, therefore he brought the boys together with a “man from Petrovka,” that is, an NKVD investigator, Comrade Sviridov. The director also found in the reference book on information about the battleship “Empress Maria” that the name of the deceased officer, the owner of the dagger, was Terentyev.
How did the guys look for the Terentyev family? A summary of the story "Dagger" will tell us about this later. A.N. Rybakov fascinatingly tells about the further investigation of the guys. They built a version, suggesting that the deceased officer was familiar with the family of Admiral Podvolotsky, whose granddaughter studied in the Mishin class. The guess was confirmed. The admiral’s widow opened a letterbox containing letters from letters from Terentyev. She also informed the boys that Nikolsky was the brother-in-law of officer Terentyev, who was killed by him (brother of his wife). As follows from the addresses in the letters, the Terentyev family lived in Pushkino.
The sixth part. Disclosure of the circumstances of the crime
We continue to give a summary of the “Dagger” (Rybakov) chapters, keeping to their order. The guys arrived in Pushkino, where they found the house in which the mother of the deceased officer, Maria Gavrilovna Terentyeva, lived. However, to their surprise, none other than Mr. Nikolsky came out of his door. The situation has acquired a dangerous turn, because a further search threatened them with a collision with an insidious bandit. Misha reported to Comrade Sviridov what had happened. He recommended that the boys no longer go to Pushkino.
Detention and confrontation
The detained leader of the bandits, denying the charges against him, claimed that he was a completely different person, the namesake of the suspect was Nikolsky Sergei Ivanovich. However, the bandit was confronted by a solid evidence base, gathered by the efforts of the boys, which Nikolsky did not suspect. The decisive role of the confrontation is narrated by a brief summary of the story "Dagger". A. N. Rybakov describes how the investigator Sviridov organized it. During a confrontation between Misha Polyakov and Nikitsky, the main character of the story told about the raid of Valery Sigismundovich’s gang on Revsk and presented a dagger to the investigation. Maria Gavrilovna Terentyeva recognized her son’s weapon, having testified that Nikitsky had tricked into her house, calling himself a stranger’s name.
Revelation
The mysterious clock was found in the house of Maria Gavrilovna. They were ancient, tower. The handle of the dagger with a snake ideally fit the groove of the watch. After its turn in the clock a cache was opened. There was a document that Nikitsky was trying to get to: the exact coordinates of the treasures that sunk on dead ships. Among them is the flagship of the Sultan of Crimea Devlet-Girey, to the treasures of which the criminal sought to reach.
Output
So you found out the summary. The "dagger" Rybakov masterfully composed and laid out a dynamic plot, in the first part it completely captures the reader's attention and does not release it until the very end of the reading - up to the sixth part of the story. In the design of the work, the potential and depth were felt, which influenced its continuation by subsequent stories “Bronze Bird” and “Shot”.
