Reviews

According to reviews of the film ā€œAnother Lifeā€ of 2017, the film is very interesting, its strength was the plot, which captures the viewer's attention at the very beginning and does not let go until the end. Interestingly, some even found it interesting to delve into the theory of creating the technology described in the film. Many argue, debate in the hope of proving or refuting the possibility of the existence of such a version of virtual reality.

Viewers reviews

Most reviews of the film ā€œAnother Lifeā€ express only approval and praise for the director, because the idea of the film is really not new (the film ā€œThe Beginningā€ with Leonardo di Caprio), however, the way it was presented and embodied deserves respect. In ā€œOther Lifeā€ everything is in place, it does not have the atmosphere so out of place so often found in many works of cinema, out of place, too much drama. Of course, many words of admiration for the actress Jessica De Gow.

Comments from critics

Harry Windsor of The Hollywood Reporter gave a review of ā€œAnother Life,ā€ and he called it ā€œa stylish science fiction work created with a sense of scale that contradicts his indie budget.ā€

In the same 2017, Luke Buckmaster of The Guardian shared a review of ā€œAnother Lifeā€, rated it 3/5 stars and wrote: ā€œBen C Lucas’s innovative thoughts about the pitfalls of technology have Hollywood appeal and are characterized by the gloomy-charismatic performance of Jessica De Goeā€ .

The emotional depth of the film

The film also has a deep emotional background. What is it like to survive a month, a few months, a year or several years in one minute. Thoughts, regrets, resentment, self-torture, lasting forever. And suddenly it turns out that in fact only a minute has passed. And everything experienced over a long time in an artificially created world must be able to realize and get along with it.

Minute

The idea did not carry anything harmful in itself, just virtual impressions that a person had never experienced in real life, a toy with pleasant memories. But this turned into a desire to rule people and the desire for personal gain. The opportunity in one minute to live a lifetime under the control of others, without even knowing what is really happening to you.

How does it feel when your time is worthless? How does it feel when you have no idea where you really are and what year? This is exactly what the director and the whole crew made to feel. It is not surprising that in almost every review of ā€œAnother Lifeā€ it is said about how deeply the director was able to penetrate the consciousness of the viewer and how much the film influenced.

Plot plot

Ren Amari is a lead researcher at a technology company she founded with Sam. The company conducts research in the field of nanotechnology and biology. Wren's research leads her to the discovery of a new form of virtual reality called the Other Life. This technology allows you to implant in a person in the brain memories that seem absolutely realistic. Before the official presentation of the product and its launch on the market, she tests it on herself with the help of an engineer Finbar. Also, in secret from the rest, she decides to test on her brother Jared, who is in a coma. Wren believes that new memories will allow him to recover. While their father wants to end Jared’s life support. Incidentally, it is precisely on his scientific work that the Other Life technology is based. Amid these issues, her affair with Danny is beginning to collapse.

Ren herself substitutes herself

Sam presents the Other Life technology to investors, assuring that its use can begin in the coming days. Wren is horrified when Sam offers to use her instead of imprisonment, implanting criminals with new memories. The prisoners would remember that they had been in prison for years, and in fact only a minute would have passed. This would solve the problem of overcrowding in prisons. Alone with Danny, Ren tells him about his research and a new simulation. An excited Danny tries it unattended, not knowing that this is an experiment that Ren designed for Jared. As a result, Danny dies in convulsions, at least, the main character thinks so.

The reviews of ā€œAnother Lifeā€ openly talk about the similarity of the plot with the content of Kelly Escridge's book ā€œSolitaireā€, published in 2002. In the same year, the writer was nominated for a Nebula Award for Best Novel. This is true, but the director Ben-Lucas and screenwriter Gregory Wyden did not shoot the film adaptation of the book, but received the right to a free interpretation of the plot.

Imprisonment in my own head

The government is prepared to drop the trial for unlicensed human trials and Danny’s death if Ren agrees to one year of solitary confinement in a projection created by Another Life. Without an alternative, Ren agrees. She then gets stuck in a simulation that includes just one room and basic necessities of life, including bottled water and canned tuna.

After a whole year, Ren crashes when the conclusion counter is reset to 0, but she does not receive an exemption. She is trapped in her own head, designed by her own technology. However, in her anger, she can move part of the wall of the virtual prison cell and escape. Soon, she realizes that she was trapped in a real camera. She runs away, finds an employee who sympathizes with her and reveals the truth that her boyfriend Danny has survived.

The illusion created in the film

Wren reunites with Danny and discovers that the Other Life project is a huge success and is widely used in many areas. It is used, inter alia, for imprisonment, lasting, as described in the film ā€œAnother Life,ā€ for many centuries.

Over time, Ren is developing a new, more advanced prototype of "Another Life." After she checks him on Jared, he comes to his senses, he reacts. However, it immediately makes it clear that he wants his own death. Ren hears his request and turns off the life support device. After that, she suddenly wakes up. Her ā€œescapeā€ was part of the test in her annual custody. All her experiences after being imprisoned become part of the interactive experience of the Other Life. Wren remains silent, knowing that Sam uses this technology against her will.

Ending

Ren, with Sam and Byron, looks through the data about the experience, Sam excitedly points to the part of the brain scan, which correlates with her interactive experience.

When Ren refuses to collaborate, Sam suddenly forces her to jail for the second year, hoping that she will again fail and allow them to learn how to develop an interactive experience on their own. Byron reluctantly agrees when Sam says this is the only way to get Ren to help.

Wren again escapes the impact of virtual reality, this time faster. She remains calm, allowing the simulation to go faster and endlessly repeat the same cycle. It was this moment in the plot that caused the most controversy in the reviews of ā€œAnother Lifeā€. She regains consciousness and lures Sam into the trap of her own year-long imprisonment program. The program gives an error, thereby putting Sam's life at risk. But Wren refuses to let Sam escape until he spends a full 365 days, and then he will wait all the time that the clock is ticking, and this is a few more days. So that he can understand, feel the agony and feelings that she herself felt at the moment when the countdown was reset to zero.

As soon as he recovers, Ren leaves the company to meet with his father. Understanding Jared’s situation, she agrees with her father’s decision to end his brother’s life support.
