What is an obsession

Each of us has at least once been in the grip of obsessions. The thought, which constantly revolves in the head, does not give rest and does not want to go anywhere, in some situations it may seem funny, and in others it will easily become a source of big problems. An example is the idea of whether you closed the bath water at home or turned off the gas in the kitchen. Such thoughts without problems can cause a real obsessive neurosis.

Some people cannot help but think that danger is in danger everywhere. This is not about paranoia, but about the case when a person fully depicts a situation that seems dangerous to him. For example, a person may be obsessed by the idea that if he goes out after ten in the evening, he will be attacked by a robber in a black jacket, with a knife in his hands and a bandana around his neck. The bottom line is that these ideas can draw very detailed images. An interesting fact is that a person suffering from the obsession described above may not even react if he is robbed on the street by a man in a black jacket, with a knife, but without a bandana. He will return home and again will cycle on an obsessive image, and he will very soon forget about the robbery that has happened.

Often an obsession grows out of a desire to do something. You should not include thoughts about vacation, going to the cinema and other things in this category, as these are ordinary desires, in which there is absolutely nothing unnatural. Obsessive ideas, as a rule, should be unusual, eccentric, unacceptable - in other words, it should contradict the nature of the person whom she visited. Often these ideas are very stupid. For example: to stand on the boss’s table in his presence, present a saleswoman from a local store with her toothbrush, and steal something from her friend’s apartment. It all sounds funny, but people suffering from it don't see anything fun here. Such thoughts can make a person nervous, twitchy, striving for loneliness, of course, this affects primarily his psyche.

Of course, an obsession can be good: make a lot of money, provide for your family, travel around the world. These ideas seem quite adequate, and differ from normal human desires only in their strength. The catch is that a person with an obsession with money will earn it all his life, without even thinking about why he needs it. A person with an obsession with family happiness will look for him all his life, but he will die alone, without having found the one with whom he could create a family.

Obsessions: how to deal with them

First of all, it is worth understanding why this neurosis has arisen: overwork, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, hidden complexes, and so on. Without understanding and awareness of the problem, it will not be possible to deal with it.

Admit to yourself that the haunting idea that is haunting you is a problem, and then try to convince yourself that it is stupid, and you should not do that. It is possible that this will help you.

Obsessions associated with fears are best treated in an “open battle”. You think that the black cat is the source of all evil on Earth, get this animal at home; You think that in the attic there is a homeless person who wants your death - go there and make sure that everything is quiet and calm.

In specific ways, one also has to contend with ideas related to order and accuracy. I believe that you yourself have already guessed how, therefore, there is no sense in continuing.

Often you can observe a neurosis of obsessive movements in children. Its treatment is best carried out with the support of a specialist, as jokes are bad with children's diseases.

In general, I want to add that it is never too late to turn to a professional psychologist who will help get rid of even the most persistent obsession once and for all.
