Kemerli's anomaly: not a disease, but a variant of the norm

Kemerli's anomaly (Kimmerly or Kimmerli) is not a disease, but a congenital abnormality. An anomaly is an extra arch, a bone growth located in the upper part of the first cervical vertebra.

Kemerli's anomaly, the treatment of which is not required for all patients, may not cause any deviations. Only in some cases, people with such abnormalities experience health complications.

Brain nutrition is provided by a system of arteries through which blood and nutrients move through the cervical vertebrae into its posterior regions. With the normal structure of the skeleton, in particular the spine, go into the cranial cavity, around the first cervical vertebra.

If a person has Kemerli anomaly, then on the vertebra there is a half-ring that can not always go around the arteries. Sometimes they are infringed between the vertebra and the muscles of the neck, which leads to a violation of cerebral circulation.

Infringement can be constant or occur with a certain position of the head, turning the neck.

How can a person understand if he has a Kemerley anomaly? Her symptoms are few, inconsistent and different in all people. However, if at least some of the following symptoms are observed, there is a reason to urgently see a doctor.

People with this deviation may experience:

• Dizziness that occurs when you tilt or change the position of the head

• Noise or hum in the ears, especially when tilting or turning the head

• “Gleam” in the eyes that occurs when turning the body or head

• Loss of balance, sometimes falling due to loss of coordination. Occurs when changing position or tilting

• Sharp muscle weakness caused by tension

If a person has Kemerli anomaly, and treatment has not been started, then the symptoms can turn into more formidable phenomena characteristic of cerebrovascular disorders:

• Severe headaches

• Eye twitching from time to time

• Decreased sensitivity on the face, arms, legs

• Complete violation of coordination

• Tremor of hands or feet

• Stroke

In order to establish what caused such a difficult condition of the patient, it is necessary to conduct a complete diagnosis.

If there is a suspicion that the cause is Kemerli's anomaly, then to confirm the diagnosis, it is prescribed:

• Study of blood flow by Doppler scanning. It allows you to see where exactly and in what position of the head the cervical arteries are compressed.

• Digital radiography. X-ray like procedure. Features higher quality images with less radiation exposure to the body

• Magnetic resonance imaging. With its help, the doctor can examine the structure of the spine, all arteries and blood vessels.

• CT scan. A procedure that clarifies the information obtained by magnetic resonance imaging.

There is no specific treatment for the anomaly, which is quite logical.

However, the treatment of symptoms helps the patients, which is selected individually for each patient. The purpose of this treatment is to weaken the tone of the cervical muscles, to ensure normal blood flow.

Kemerli's anomaly, more precisely, its symptoms are eliminated with the help of simple manipulations. The patient is assigned:

• Massage

• Acupuncture

• Hirudotherapy

• Wearing special neckline collars

• In more severe cases, normalization of blood circulation with medications.

In addition, each person with such a deviation in the structure of the spine receives individual recommendations related to the features of prevention and behavior. Common to all are:

• Limitation of sudden movements and physical activity, especially in the neck

• Gymnastic exercises, selected strictly individually

• Continuous observation by a neurologist

• Immediate medical attention in case of exacerbation
