Recently, there has been an opinion that only independent filmmakers can save horror as a genre, not suffering from clichés imposed by movie studios. It is difficult to disagree with this idea, especially if one recalls the high-profile successes of the paintings “The Way to the South”, “Babaduk” and “It”, which were filmed inventively, extraordinary and definitely eerie. Such projects undoubtedly include the hypnotic debut horror of the once-production designer, and now the visionary Robert Eggers “The Witch” (2015). Few people know the film in Russia, because he never got to the national box office. The project earned rave reviews from film critics and an IMDb rating of 6.80.

Short storyline
The action takes place in New England in the gloomy 17th century. A family of colonists, having separated from the community, settles in the forest edge and tries to independently manage the economy. But luck clearly bypasses them. In the beginning, the whole crop dies, after which the baby disappears, for whom the elder sister Tomasin (the brilliant debutante Anya Taylor-Joy) was supposed to look after. These incidents are only the threshold of terrible events, after which the girl’s mother begins to suspect her child of witchcraft. By the way, the actors of the film “The Witch” (2015) had to play several variations of the ending of the tape. In one, Thomasine in the finale really becomes a witch. In the second, it turns out that the girl was originally an accomplice of the devil and destroyed the family of Christians from the inside. In the third event, they occur only in the consciousness of one of the key characters and do not have a real background.
Acting Ensemble
The duet of performers, known to the public through the Game of Thrones, Ralph Aineson, who played the father of William's family, and Kate Dickey, who played the role of Katerina, who gave birth to Thomasin, Caleb, the twins Jonas and Mercy, and also after the missing Samuel, the audience will remember for a long time. Like the demon-possessed Caleb, on the screen of which Harvey Scrimshaw embodied. Spooky twins performed by the very young Lucas Dawson and Ellie Granger look no less spectacular. The sinister chant of young twins about a goat, nicknamed Black Philip involuntarily cuts into memory. But Anya Taylor-Joy is exceptionally good, around whose character the whole dramaturgy of horror is built. She, of course, is not Linda Blair from the legendary Exorcist, but she is incredibly impressive and realistic. The actors of the film “The Witch” (2015) not without reason earned the praise of critics and the audience.
