The life of Nikolai Gogol was shrouded in mystery even for his contemporaries. Even the real date of his birth became known only after the death of the writer. He suffers from strange fits. During one of them, he even helps to solve the murder - Gogol’s hand displays tips for the investigator on paper. The killer was found, and the intrigued Yakov Guro turns back to Gogol. Not far from the writer's small homeland, strange frightening events take place in the village of Dikanka. The investigator goes there and invites Gogol with him. Soon, all his mystical characters, which will be included in his first collection, Nikolai will see firsthand.

The role of Gogol himself was played by the young but famous actor Alexander Petrov. Behind his shoulders are many diverse films. The actor admits that Nikolai Vasilievich, having seen a film about himself, would say something obscene, but enthusiastic. The film is a mixture of real incidents from the writer's life and mystical stories written by him. The hero of Alexander constantly faints and lives in a world of his own illusions.
