Everyone at least once in his life heard the word "palette knife". What it is? These are thin, easily bending steel plates in the form of knives or blades.
How to draw with a palette knife?
The technique of drawing with a palette knife is quite noticeably different from brushing, and it may seem rather unusual to a beginner. A small amount of paint is taken from the palette edge of the spatula. Next, you need to apply the lateral part of the palette knife to smudge it on the canvas or not to push it strongly into it.
What is useful for drawing with a palette knife?
It is necessary to take:
- a stretched, previously primed canvas, the size of which is 50 x 40 cm;
- trimming white cotton material without a single speck and pollution;
- charcoal pencil;
- purified turpentine;
- several types of oil paints: lemon, scarlet cadmium, green (emerald and grass), natural umber, blue ultramarine, titanium white, as well as crimson speck;
- a pair of pear-shaped palette knife for drawing: small, whose length is 55 cm, and narrow 90 mm long.
- spatula for mixing paints.
Beginning of work
1. It is preferable to draw on an easel. Place it a few meters away from the visual sample and a little to the right, so that the pineapple is clearly visible because of it. Take a charcoal pencil and draw a sketch of the fruit and the folds of material. You need to understand that any person, even a novice, will be greatly helped by this master class. Palette knife - this is an item with which to work is not very difficult.
2. Apply base paints mixed with turpentine to the sheet. To do this, you need a swab made of scrap material. Lemon cadmium is designed to paint the upper area of ββthe fruit, and to image the bottom you will need to mix it with scarlet. For the right side of the pineapple, a warm brown shade is suitable. It can be obtained from scarlet and white paints with the addition of umber. For drawing leaflets you will need green emerald paint. Soon you will need a spatula. What it is is known to all artists.
3. Next, you need to apply a dark blue color to the canvas - this will be the background. Use a cotton swab. If you have a background before your eyes, it will be easier for you to appreciate the color of the fruit. Remember this. The dark blue color, combined with the crimson speck, will help to dilute the background shade. Saturated green touches as if portend the appearance of pineapple leaves.
4. A spatula, which is 55 cm long, apply a thicker layer of blue. So the picture will become more expressive. Painting with a palette knife is something divine. Learn to draw diligently to achieve heights in this endeavor.
Generously scoop up the blue paint with the bottom of the spatula. Put it on the canvas. Add a few blue strokes to the leaves. Wipe the palette knife with a cloth and apply a small amount of green grass paint, combined with lemon cadmium, to the fruit. Do it carefully.
The main stages of work
5. Then apply a small amount of scarlet and red shades to the pineapple . Colors may not seem realistic to you, but there is nothing to worry about. At this stage, you just need to slightly supplement the picture with warm shades.
Combine a drop of Kraplak with lemon cadmium. Then mix them with the green tint on the fruit. Apply a small amount of fuchsia paint by combining the white speckle with scarlet directly on the sheet. Do this carefully. Mark the pattern on the fruit by drawing several scarlet lines with the tip of the shoulder blade.
6. Up to this point, for the most part, you have smeared the paint in pieces, using the flat part of the spatula. And now it's time to move on to drawing. Creating a painting with a palette knife is a lengthy process that involves several stages.
Mark the stripes of the geometric pattern, while scraping the paint with the edge of the scapula. After a while they can be removed, but now you will be guided by them. Try to draw them on the whole pineapple to give it volume.
7. Combine a small amount of scarlet kraplak, lemon cadmium and white to create a calm red color. By bending the edge of the palette knife, draw the sides of the fruit between the stripes of its "geometric pattern."
8. Draw all the elements of the picture at the same time. Do not attempt to modify one part before returning to another. For now, go to the background and remove the paint with a piece of cloth in brighter places. This must be done.
Shutdown
9. Add a little white to the green emerald paint and paint thick, bright stripes with the tip of a palette knife. Do it energetically and confidently. In particular, spatulas are needed for this process. What is it, you now know.
10. With the edge of the shoulder blade, draw leaves from the opposite side.
11. Fruit is your main object, but the background is no less important, so do not ignore it. Using the underside of the spatula, whose length is 55 cm, refine the bright spots using all kinds of mixtures of white and dark blue.
12. To get warm shades, combine the blue speckle with the scarlet. What about the cold ones? For them, it is necessary to combine blue with burnt umber.
After creating the first picture, you will probably want to draw another masterpiece, so do not put your palette knife in the far box. What is it, today is known even to many children. And this is not surprising, because this drawing technique fascinates everyone.
