When the patient comes to the reception and voices his complaints to the medical professional, then after examining and collecting an anamnesis, the doctor writes out, for example, a prescription for ointment in Latin, because not every form can be bought. Some can only be done.
Statement of dosage forms. General Provisions
A prescription is a written prescription from a doctor to a pharmacist about which ingredients a medicine should be made from.
A Latin ointment prescription may include:
- Ointment bases, which are of animal, vegetable, mineral and synthetic origin.
- The main acting principle. If it is one, then this is a simple ointment, if two or more is complex.
The prescription of all drugs is done in Latin. Instructions on how to use in Russia are written in Russian, as it is intended for a patient who does not speak Latin.
What is included in the recipe
Prescription forms are standardized and must include the following:
- Stamp honey. institutions.
- Indication, adult or children's prescription. The necessary is emphasized.
- Date of discharge.
- Name of the patient. How old is he.
- Name of the doctor. It may be a stamp.
- Medicinal prescription.
- Indication to the pharmacist about the delivery of the medicine to the patient.
- An indication to the patient how to use it (once a day, two to three times, etc.).
- Signature of the doctor, his personal round stamp.
- Round stamp of a medical institution where it stands in the center - "for recipes."
- Validity of the recipe.
These are the short rules for writing prescriptions.
The main section of the recipe
Traditionally, the recipe is written in Latin. It is studied in all medical schools.
A modern doctor often writes a prescription in abbreviated form.
Latin for doctors involves prescribing a prescription in the genitive case. But the ointment, instead of full Unguentlim, is abbreviated Ung. Be sure to capitalize the name of the base, such as Lanolini. Ol. instead of Oleum (oil), more precisely Olei, and in the genitive case the word "peach", Persicori.
The name of each component is written on a new line. This does not end the recipe for an ointment in Latin for a patient with atopic dermatitis. The composition also includes water. It is also written in abbreviation on the next line: Aq. instead of Aquae distillatae (more precisely, it looks like Aq. Destill). The next line indicates the desired volume.
Here is the above recipe for ointment in Latin:
Ung. Lanolini.
Ol. persicori.
Aq. Destill
30.0.
The next line for the patient is in Russian. Ointment: Lubricate the skin 2 p. in a day. That's the whole recipe for ointment in Latin.
Why Doctors Use Extinct Language
Doctors are a closed professional community. They use Latin for a number of reasons.
- Firstly, it is a tribute to an ancient tradition. The heyday of medicine and treatises on it fell on the period of Roman antiquity. To take advantage of their knowledge, every respectable Aesculapian owned, read and wrote Latin. The entire medieval educational system necessarily included knowledge of Latin, and, of course, it was used so that only scientists could understand what the composition of the medicine was and no one could self-medicate.
- The second is the fragmentation of medieval Europe, where they spoke different languages. Latin came up as universal, which was understood by physicians, lawyers, and philosophers. So the language barrier that stood between the students themselves and their teachers was overcome in universities. It was not too difficult to master it, since the bulk of the Romance languages ββwas based on Latin. In the XIX century, this role was played by French, and in the XX - English, as universal languages ββof interethnic communication. But Latin was already deeply rooted in science and continued to live and serve medicine. In addition, we should not forget that Latin in Western Europe was supported by the Catholic Church. A modern doctor, having opened a special journal in a foreign language, will understand in general terms what is at stake, since the main names are given in Latin or very strongly Latinized.
- Professional suitability. The study of Latin reveals lazy and negligent students in universities in the first year and allows you to sift the ballast, which will be harmful to patients. During rounds in hospitals, when the patient is severe, doctors can exchange opinions directly in the ward in Latin, without affecting the feelings of the patient and his relatives. Only after reaching a certain agreement among themselves, they delicately, and not directly in the forehead, inform the patient and his relatives about how things are and what the prognosis is.
